Can i use the machine hp c5180 to scan document even if no ink?

Ria,

Please understand that the scanner and the printer have no connection. So, even if the printer is dead you can still scan. Yes, you will have problems when you want to print the scanned copy.

Scanner will not scan to image only printer or memory card

If you are using Windows 7, check www.hp.com for an update on the appropriate driver download page - there is a know issue with the driver software that prevents scans from being saved anywhere.

You would need to download the software for your printer again and then install it on your computer. You can download it from here. Once it is installed, look for the scanner icon or HP Director which would have scanner icon.

HP photosmart c5180 with vista 32 operating system, scanner on HP will not work with Vista os and HP instructions to go to Paint will not work either

you could be having application error. since you can print, you should be able to scan.
uninstall the entire package and start afresh, but follow the steps critically.

Just installed my HP photosmart C5180 all in one, I connected threw a USB I have uninstalled then reinstalled. Same problem scanner and copier does not work. there is a screen that said there is a DDE...

I would search for latest drivers for the photosmart and download them. Than turn on machine before connecting to computer.
Also you should go to control panel, printers, and see if your machine is listed there and set as default printing device.

Scan to computer not working

Google, enter "HP Photosmart C5180 All-in-One" and you can reinstall the scanner into computer...free.  Under the black apple in the upper corner of screen find "recent Items" and you will find the Photosmart Studio where the scanner icon is used to scan and create a file in thecomputer.
