Inkjet cartridge part numbers
The HP
Officejet 4100 all-in-one series products use the ink cartridges listed
in the table below.
HP Inkjet cartridges
HP 56 black cartridge (19 ml)
HP 57 tri-color cartridge (17 ml)
HP 28 tri-color cartridge (8 ml)
Replacing the ink cartridgesThe power must be turned ON to the all-in-one
or the print carriage will not move to the right.
- Locate
and open the print cartridge access door on the right side of the
all-in-one. The print cartridge carriage will move to the right for
access.
Figure
1: Opening the HP Officejet 4100 series
- Press down gently on the top of the old ink
cartridge to release it from the print carriage.
Figure 2:
Removing an ink cartridge
- Remove the new print cartridge from its
packaging and remove the protective tape from the cartridge as shown in
Figure 3. Do not touch the gold-colored contacts.
Figure 3:
Removing the cartridge tape
- Holding the ink cartridge with the printed
label up, slide the cartridges one at a time into the print carriage and
press them into position as shown in Figure 4. If the cartridge does
not snap easily into position, it is not aligned correctly. Remove the
cartridge and reposition it. Do not try to force the cartridge into
position. The black ink cartridge (HP #56) goes on the right side and
the color cartridge (HP #57 or HP #28) goes on the left side. Close the
ink cartridge access door when the ink cartridge has been installed.
Figure
4: Installing the ink cartridges
- A message will appear on the front panel
requesting that the ink cartridges be aligned. Follow the steps below to
align the ink cartridges:
- Press Enter on the all-in-one front panel to start the ink
cartridge alignment process.
- After
the Alignment page prints, place the page into the ADF upside down and
with the printed side down as is shown in Figure 5.
- Press Enter. The all-in-one will scan the
alignment page and finish aligning the cartridges.

Correcting error messages that
appear after changing a cartridgeAfter
inserting the cartridge, the Check Print Cartridge light flashes or one
of the following messages appears on the computer monitor:
- Check the
black (or color) cartridge
- Replace
the black (or color) cartridge
- The wrong black (or color) cartridge is installed
These messages indicate that the ink cartridge
is not making good electrical contact, is bad, or is the wrong
cartridge. Complete the following steps to diagnose and correct the
condition:
- Open the front of the unit to access the print
cartridges (as shown in Figure 1).
- Remove the ink cartridge and inspect it.
- Verify that it is the correct part number and
if it is, reinsert it.
- Close
the lid to see if the problem is corrected.
- If the message is still displayed after a few
seconds, remove the ink cartridge again.
- Unplug the power cord from the back of the
unit.
- Clean the electrical
contacts on the ink cartridge with a soft clean cloth slightly dampened
(not wet) with clean water. (See Figure 6) Each contact is very small
and shaped like a rounded square.
Figure 6: Cleaning the cartridge
contacts
- Allow the ink cartridge to dry for a few
minutes before reinserting the cartridge(s) and turning on the printer.
- If the problem remains, replace the ink
cartridge.
- If the problem
still exists after trying all of the steps above, the unit may need to
be serviced. Contact HP for further troubleshooting or to arrange to
have the unit serviced.
Make sure what ur using isn't a refilled cartridge and if it is check the expiration date, if nothing is wrong then you need to get urself a new printer or an upgrade so call up hp at 1800-474-6836 and get help of them, they'll guide you to a new /upgrade printer.
it's not a nice way of saying it but someone has to give you the bad news
that was the start of the problem, but the spring breaks loose and punches a hole in the circuit board. Thus making this printer a giant pirce of junk.
it is a non servicable part by HP.
some other sites have said they called and had HP replace the printer, this is a Kown HP defect and needs to be recalled.
i agree, HP needs to step up and recall or make parts available for repair.
i replaced mine with a CANON.
same problem but w/color cartridge
The same thing just happened to my 7310. Is there a fix for it?
I have the same or similar problem. How did you get a replacement? I would like to give this one back. They cost to much to be considered a throw away. I have 2 canon printers . i droped the printer cariage and broke it. I called for replacement , they sent it and i fix it in 2 minutes. HP is not user friendly and should be held accountable. If they don't recall these or replace them , the people who own the should start a class action suit for damages and a suit for punitive damages for not acting on this sooner, knowing the problem and only replacing the printer for a few luck people. I want my printer replaced the same as the others. This isn't a lottery it is peoples lives and time wasted with the big runaround. Does anyone else want to join suit?
1 year and 2 months after purchased and only the first time replacing the ink, I encountered this design defect on my HP 7410. HP acknowledges this and offer an extended warranty so long as your printer was manufactured in 2005-6 (s/n starts with MY5 or MY6). If you own one that was manufactured later (2007 for me), then they expect you to eat the cost.
I spent hours talking with Tech Support, Exec. Relations Group, & Case Managers trying to get the crappy printer replaced to no avail. The responses of the HP reps I spoke with are the
same across the board: they apologize and then try to sell me more HP
products. Are they kidding???
I rely heavily on computer products and I recently
opened my own office. My 7410 HP printer was the first HP product I've
ever purchased. Will I ever get an explanation as to why my serial
number is not included in the extended warranty despite the obvious sign that the original
defect was never fixed? Maybe I'm ahead of my time and the first one
with a MY7 serial to complain about this? Hah! Based on my experience
in the last few hours, I've lost faith in HP products. Not only will I
not spend another dime on HP, I will dissuade those around me from
making the same mistake.
I will be on the lookout for a class action lawsuit against HP re. this issue.
the spring in the ink is broken, it keeps saying check ink & try again, ive had it a while but its been broken for about 7 months, ive tried everywhere to buy the parts, but cant get what i want,,, i love it & dont want to part with it, it seems stupid for such a small problem,
"Remove and Check Cartridge on Right" message. Done but no help.
My screen says "Insert black or photo print cartridge in right stall", even though I have put two different black cartridges in, correctly. It pays no attention. I called H-P, the tech said, "I can't help you with that."
Black cartridge won't work
