It probably is indicating that your camera's Image Stabilizer in on in continuous mode. You can check it by going into the Menu and looking for an IS Mode, Continuous will be selected.
Hope that helps.

What Image Stabilizing does is help the camera compensate for any movement you might make while taking a picture. This would be most important on picture that are taken in low light, like indoors at night.
If you are happy with how your pictures are coming out, leave it as it is. There really is no reason to change the mode, as it should help you get the best pictures you can out of your camera.

Playback menu as described previously.
3. Use the Up/Down navigation buttons to
select One to protect this picture/video,
or select All to protect all pictures/videos in
the internal memory or memory card. Then
press the Right navigation button.
4. Use the function button to select Yes to lock
the displayed picture/video or Unlock

Also keep in mind the card it self has a write protect on it if you hold the sd in front of you label side up its on the left hand side its just a little slide tab.

Unknown icon on a Canon G9

This is the anti-shake image stabilization (IS) icon. It just means that the camera will assist you in taking crisper shots even if your hands are not super steady.
To turn it off, press the "Menu" button and then scroll down the first tab until you get to "IS". Then, use the directional control buttons to choose whether it is always on, sometimes, or off.

this is a symbol for a low light condition. Either increase the light by opening curtains using in-direct light or just use a flash.

Canon Power Shot A710 is

The hand with parenthesis is your image stabilization. It sounds like if your images are turning out black, you may need service.

Try hitting your display button a few times and see if anything shows up on the screen.

Zooming in.

Your camera jumped out of gear. Open the front metal cover and disassemble all arm working with the main motor gear and try to reposition the red dot on the big gear with the small gear side by side. Presto now your camera is aligned. Place all arms back in order to your new alignment.you got your self a working camera. D: 3403 3404 mean error = some thing is block your lense and stopping the motored gear. For future referance don't drop the camera agian, next time it might be a expensive fix next time around.

Problem with Shutter/Lenz

This sounds like a stuck shutter. There is a delicate assembly inside your lens that will block the light right when you snap the picture allowing the image sensor to record what it saw at that very moment. This shutter is composed of two blades that come from either side of the field of view and overlap to completely block the light. It sounds like what has happened to your camera is that one of those blades has either come off its guide or has become stuck. The shutter assemblies in these cameras seem to be very delicate and sensitive to even minor impact. Due to the anti-shake features it will have to be returned to the manufacturer for service if you want to get it fixed. David Millier Advance Camera Repair
