DFU means:
Device Firmware Update, hence it’s a mode where the iPod Touch device will be made to force restore into whatever versions it’s given with.

If you're not trying to 'restore' it, take it out of this mode
[If you are, you should be installing firmware]

Here are instructions that are Windows & MAC compatible:
[remember this is HOW to get to DFU mode

Before you begin, turn on your iPod Touch (make sure it won’t auto lock, to prevent mistakes), and connect it to iTunes. Once iTunes shows your device, perform the following steps:
Step 1: Hold down the “Home” button
Step 2: Hold down the “Standby” button
Step 3: When it says “slide to turn off”, ignore it. It should restart with a blank screen. Look at iTunes, and your device should be removed. Now lift the Standby button, while still holding onto the Home button.
Step 4: Keep holding the Home button until the iPod reconnects on iTunes. When the device shows up in iTunes, that’s when you’ll need to lift up your button. If you wait any longer, it will go into Recovery Mode, and that’s not what you want. Your iPod should be blank.
Step 5: Now iTunes will tell you that the iPod Touch is in Recover Mode.

If you didn't know exactly how you got where you are, or you want to change the mode, use the directions to guide you.
If that doesn't solve it, post back with more details

Iphone 5 won't restore! Kill me knowwwww

DFU doesnt happens with volume button. You keep connected the phone to computer then hold the Power and home button. Once you see the screen go off and come back again then wait till it goes off again and exactly after 3 seconds leave the power button and keep holding the home button.Your phone will be in DFU mode now.But honestly speaking the kind of troubleshooting you have done it seems there seems to be problem with hardware and most probably it is baseband (radio chip)

What is dfu mode and how do you do it

You enter dfu mode so iTunes can detect an iPhone in recovery mode and then prompt you to restore. You will lose all your files when you do this but if you have a backup in iTunes then you're good to go. To enter dfu mode, just press both power and home buttons simultaneously for exactly 10 seconds. After 10 seconds, release the power but keep holding home then wait until iTunes detects your iphone and prompt you to restore.

Put it in duf mode qnd restore it

If you are getting error (1) or error (6) while downgrading the firmware, you need to put your iPhone in DFU mode before you can restore or downgrade the firmware.
Step 1. Turn off your iPhone.
Step 2. Hold down the power and home button.
Step 3. When you see the Apple logo, release the power button but continue holding the home button down.
Step 4. Open iTunes and wait for it to tell you that its in restore mode.
Alternative Method:

Step 1. Connect iphone to USB then listen to the sound when it connect and disconnect.
Step 2. Hold the home and power buttons until hear the disconnect sound then release power button.
Step 3. Wait until you hear another sound then release home button.
Alternate Method: Going Into DFU Mode Without Button Pushing: (on windows) Easier than timing the buttons just right!

1.) First download the required archive
2.) Extract the archive to the root of your hard drive, should be C:/DFU/
3.) Connect your iPhone and ignore iTunes
4.) Goto Start - run
5.) Next type in "c:/dfu/dfu iBSS.m68ap.RELEASE.dfu"
6.) Wait for iPhone to show a "white" screen
7.) Now you may proceed to downgrade!
**also these files are found in ibrickr's directory except for the .dfu file**

Ipod keep freezing with only the apple showing on screen...wont do anything else...says port is not found

1) Start iTunes.

2) Power the device on by holding the sleep/wake and home button for about 10 seconds. Release the sleep/wake button, but keep holding the home button.

3) If you did it correctly, the device will be showing either a connect to itunes screen (recovery mode) or a black screen (DFU mode) We are trying for DFU mode here, but recovery may work too. Connect the ipod to your computer. iTunes will tell you that it has detected an iPhone or iPod touch in recovery mode.

4) If you see the iTunes icon and cable on your iPhone, your device is not in DFU mode, but in recovery mode. Your device's screen will be black when you are in DFU mode. I always have to try this several times so succeed.

5) Connect your device back to your Pc/Mac and press SHIFT+CLICK (pc) or COMMAND+ CLICK on the restore button.

6) Select the firmware version you'd like to install from your computer. You can google for ipod touch firmare to download the file, or just let it update right from apple.
7) Wait for a couple of minutes and your iPhone/iPod will be as new.

Apple iphone 1st generation

That is DFU mode. It's there for software upgrading/downgrading. If you can't get out of this mode, reloading the firmware from Itunes will release it.

Open up Itunes.
Connect your IPhone.
Select your IPhone in the left window frame.
Press the "Check for Updates" button located in the summary frame.
Click "Download and Install."
Don't disconnect it while it's doing it's thing.

Once it finishes you will be out of DFU mode.

Hope this helps,

Iphone will not restore

Try restoring in DFU mode, which is different than recovery mode. I happened to stumble across it while trying to restore an iPhone 3G that a user unplugged in the middle of the 3.1 update. It kept showing an error of 1611 or 13 and wouldn't restore in recovery mode. I found this DFU mode option and the restore worked fine. The DFU mode keeps the iPhone OS from loading, so you don't run into as many compatibility problems. Go into DFU mode, then try restoring the phone and see if that works.
To enter DFU mode:
1. Connect your iPhone to your computer
2 . Turn iPhone off. You may have to hold the power and home buttons down together to force the phone off
3. Once the phone is off, hold the power and home buttons together for 10 seconds exactly
4. After 10 seconds, release the power button but keep holding home until the computer recognizes that a USB device was plugged in
5. iTunes should detect your iPhone correctly, and also allow you to restore to the factory default settings
