I added 1 GB DDR to my old Gateway ESX 500S as it needed memory, but it is not registering. Is there something I need to do so the machine recognizes the new chip?

Trying to help a buddy upgrade his gateway esx 500s memory as he only has 256mb, is there a limit to how much mem this comp can take or can i install 2GB 2x1GB PC2100 ECC REG MEMORY (CM12872ERX22100DI

Hi Steve Handel II,
Yes that machine has limited RAM capacity, that model can go up to 1GB of RAM total (2x512MB DIMMs.) It takes DDR PC2700, CL=2.5 unbuffered, non-ECC DDR333 memory chips. The good news is you can get them for $10-$20 most anywhere. Like HERE

Good Luck

2G RAM's for Elitegroup (ECS) L7VMM2 Rev 1.0A Motherboard

You're board can handel; DDR SDRAM up to 200 or 266MHz DDR SDRAM memory module. Accommodates two "unbuffered", 2.5V 184-pin slots. Each slot supports up to 1 GB with a total maximum capacity of 2 GB. Return the Kingston memory you have installed if it is less than a year old. They should allow you to trade up to the MB's supported memory.
Two reach the MB's max memmory of 2GB. Buy two Kingston DIMMS of, "unbuffered", 2.5V 184-pin
DIMMs. Here is one site that sells Kingston memory;

I have a gateway esx 500s and tried to install memory and it wouldnt boot up. Placed the original memory back in the system and it wont boot up. It just reboots over and over. What could cause this?

Why were you trying to replace ram or was it an upgrade....ensure all slots are clean incl the ram stick(s)

If you have a separate vid card / reseat it as pushing in ram can dislodge it.

Is ddr upgrade to 1 gig for gateway mdw 500s? Is there a way that I can install a nic/ wireless card to pick up signals?

we need model number of the laptop please mdw 500s i cannot find listed. If its the same as the nx 500s then ddr 333 is required (200 pin sodimm modules)
for wireless they installed
Intel® PRO/Wireless IEEE 802.11b/g network card, Mini-PCI Pentium® M models only)
-OR-
Broadcom IEEE 802.11b/g network card, Mini-PCI (Celeron™ M models only)
  • FN+F2 keyboard combination toggles wireless networking
  • Antenna: Uses factory-installed internal antenna assembly
  • Operating channels: 11 selectable channels
  • Security: 128 and 64 bit WEP encryption
  • Operating Frequency: 2.4 GHz Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum
  • Maximum Data Rate:
    54 Mbps (IEEE802.11g)
    11 Mbps (IEEE802.11b)
I am not sure where you will find a mini PCi card to suit i would just use a slot in pcmcia card or usb adaptor

Added 1 gb memory ddr400 to motherboard, no added memory

Yes, lots have changed. You changed the memory.

Step one. Goto Start, control panel, system. See how much memory is displayed. If its the same, then you have to update your "BIOS". goto the manufacturers website and click on support by your model # to do this.

If it shows the new memory, then your fine.

Let me know if this fixes it!
