My dewalt 18 volt Dc988 XRP will not engage when you squeeze the trigger all the time. It goes in streaks or is intermittent. Also the variable speed is not working. it only goes one speed.

Your switch is having a problem it can be caused by excessive load on the motor.
The motor must be sounds not shrill and must have power , the most people think on the batteries but in more case by switch problems its the motor there is a field effect transistor inside the switch behind the cooling brass plate thats shorted and that is for the variable rpm .
Replace switch and if the motor sounds good then the problem should solved. if also the motor is bad go for a new replacement body ask your dealer.

Variable speed is not working. Is there something I can to do to fix this?

Most parts are not longer available the assembly also not Converting so it runs at full speed and use a variac on the mains power supply.

Fix a dw788 dewalt scrollsaw thtslost its speed cotroll

Do you mean lost as in 'completely missing' or as in 'stopped working'?
The only moving parts are the on/off switch and the speed control knob and variable resistor. On mine, I had to replace the variable resistor pot. You have to get one with the same resistance rating. If you know what it is, you can get them off ebay. Doesn't have to be designed for a scrollsaw. They're all the same whether they're for a saw or for a radio volume control. Only the resistance needs to be matched. (Well, the way the knob fits on the post has to match too.)

My Dewalt DW056 doesn't run variable speed. It's either full speed or not at all. Can this be fixed?

It can be fixed, you just need a new switch. I can not find a Dewalt model number DW056 so I'm not sure what switch you need. The DW053 and DW055 use the same switch, part number N034934. A DW057 uses either part number 152274-15 or 152274-23 which is a variable speed switch. Make sure which model you have and which switch you need, Dewalt switches are expensive, most are $50 and up, and it's hard to return electronic parts to most parts distributors.

Saw has no power.

Does the motor continue to run, but the arm stops? It sounds like the set screw on the motor shaft is loose. See the exploded view at this link. It's called out as # 97

I have a 20'' dewalt scroll saw that will not start

If you are getting voltage then it is most likely the control board. You would need to take it into a repair service center and they would have to pull the whole thing down to repair.
