Dear Fixya,
Thank you for your response. I have meanwhile located a source of drive belts (Maplin Electronics) and feel partly confident that I will be able to suss out how the belt should be fitted.

first of all the radio mechanism is either dirty check capstans which roller presses aganst when you press the play button ensure that they are clean second the belt may be worn causing it to slip replacement of drive belt would be recommended or if your lucky the motor may have a speed adjuster on the back that you may be able to utilze a precision screw driver.

How do you disassemble the belts from the tape deck and replace? Montgomery Ward boombox model # GEN 3996A. Is there a schematic to show how to disassemble or shows layout of assembly?

Replacing belts are like opening a cars gear box. You might end up messing the whole mechanism as there are springs and levers with specific alignment. Leave it to an experienced technician.Changing a belt always sound simple.

Is a drive belt available for this tape recorder and is it fairly simple to replace?

Thanks for the additional information.

I haven't replaced one on that particular model before, but as models of the period were designed to be dismantled for regular maintenance it's not usually difficult to do.

Replacement drive belts are readily available: as an example look at this listing on the Swiss eBay website which also includes a handy photo of a typical drivebelt installation. Although the listing is in German, the information is repeated in English further down the page. Best of all this drive belt is listed as being a brand new (compatible) one, old stock (original equipment) ones are usually perished and useless. Just make sure that you tell the seller that it's for the Telefunken M204 if you place an order. You can browse for additional spares by clicking here.

If you have any questions regarding my reply then please add a further comment, but if I have answered your question please let me know by sparing a moment to rate my answer.

Tape deck is stuck

push the eject button at the same time get a nail file and insert it in the tape slot
on the right hand side of the deck
it may take three hands one to push eject one to push the eject mechanism inside the radio behind the tape
and one to help remove the tape
if that doesnt work....dont try forcing anything as the stereo WILL break..... take the stereo out of the car, so it is not connected to the electrics, then either, gently take it apart with a screwdriver

I would suspect the belts, look for any small motors and missing belts. You may be able to manualy turn a wheel or gear till it ejects.
if your not comfortable doing this urself with the above said porcedures... its better to take it to the dealer...

Sony HCD-GRX40AV Cassette Player Belt Layout Diagram Required

Hi , i have just spent half of yesterday trying to replace 4 belts in a sony twin player , you wont need a manual just take the cover off and remove the white plastic cover off the cassette unit at the front , after you remove this cover all will be revealed , my opinion is get a repair person to do it for you as it is really fiddly and time consuming plus you have to buy the right belts anyway , hope this helps ..

Cassettes tapes not moving in my Panasonic RX-ED77

If you can her the motor turning, there is a good chance that the belt(s) have broken and need to be replaced. If you hear nothing, then there could be a control issue. I'm leaning toward the belts though. Figure on $5-$15 for the belts,

Dan
