Setting up connection at a different location

I have a Toshiba Laptop with a Vista system.  I used the Linksys wireless in Odessa through my Cable One and a router.   Now I have moved to Abilene and the place I am staying has a Mac Version 10.4.  He gets his internet through ATT and a router.  How can I set it up so that my laptop and his computer will both connect to the internet?  Denise niec3c@aol.com

Hi there,

Just set it up the same way as before. Macs and PCs can share the same router, WiFi technology is compatible with both.

Best way to do this is with Airport station. I'm unsure that your Mac will 'see' that linksys unit, without a shift in the PnP used on mac side, and DHCP on PC side. Of course, maybe someone's figured it out, but I'd be the 2nd most surprised person then.

got backup for those computers?

Using Cisco Router E1000. Wireless laptop will not stay connected to the internet. I have to unplug everything, and then it will only stay connected to the internet for 1 session. If I turn off the...

Frequent wireless disconnection can be caused by different factors such as:
  1. Wireless interference within the network.
  2. Wireless settings of the Linksys router are still set to default.
  3. Firmware is corrupted.
a-2.4 GHz interference: Your router may be operating on the same frequency as your cordless telephone system (or even your neighbors'), or other nearby equipment. Try to change your router's channel to 1 or 11 (the default channel is 6) and restart the wireless computers.
b-Physical obstructions: Your router or wireless computers may be losing connectivity because of physical obstacles such as walls and floors. Try to move the equipment to different locations to find a better link.
  • Placement of the router: Linksys suggests that you place your router as high off the ground as possible. When placing the router in a high location, leave a distance of two feet between the router antenna tips, ceiling, and wall. If your signal passes through multiple floors, place the router on the upper-most floor, and high up in the room.

  • Surroundings: Keep the router away from large metal objects, bodies of water (fish tanks, bathrooms), and any electrical equipment including television sets, microwaves, radios, etc.
Customizing Wireless Settings of the Router
Having default wireless settings on the Linksys router may cause conflict with other Linksys routers within your network range. We suggest changing the SSID (network name) and the Wireless Channel of your router. Also, if it is possible, enable the Wireless Security of your router.
1)To change the router's SSID or the wireless network's name, click here.
2)To change the router's channel, click here.
3)To enable the wireless security on the router, click here.
NOTE: If the wireless connection remains unstable after performing the steps above, it could mean that your firmware is corrupted. For instructions to reload or upgrade firmware, click here.

I think is better to configure your router again, so you can set the router to keep alive every time.

I have a desktop and a laptop (new for xmas) and I want to set up the laptop to the wireless-N Router Model WRT160N. I am set up with internet through a bundle system through our television. Do I plug the...

first a couple of things.
if your router has wireless support your laptop (if new) should have a wireless adapter built in, so basically your destop computer can be wirely plugged into the router and your laptop shoud "connect wirelessly" to your adapter
so this is how your set up should look like

desktop
--cable-- = - cablemodem - = linksys router = ----- wire----- desktop

laptop
--cable-- = - cablemodem - = linksys router = ))wireless))) laptop

you need read up a bit, here are some links that will have info you need

manual for wireless configuration (select the proper revision for your router and check user manual)

configure wireless network for vista

read up and if you have any questions post back.

hope that helps.

Linksys wireless router isn't working

What is the Operating system on the laptop ?
If it is XP then in the bottom right hand corner you will find Wireless network connection ( looks like 1 computer monitor). Use that icon to connect to the wireless network.
If it is windows Vista, then in the bottom right hand corner you will find 2 computer monitor icon. Use that icon to connect to the wireless network.
If it is Windows 98/ME/2000 then use the adapter utility to connect to the wireless network.
For MAC you will see the AIRPORT icon at the top.

Check the wireless settings of the router first . Make sure that you have all the wireless settings of the router. If you are not sure about the settings, then open the router set up and check the settings.

Windows Vista Internet Connection problem

Are you on the wireless internet or on the internet through a cat5 cable? If on through the wireless I think its a wouter issue. try upgrading the firmware of your router first. If that doesn't work try using a different router. Also try upgrading your drivers on your computer for however you are connecting to the internet. Either your network card or your wireless card via device manager. One of those solutions should solve the problem.

Trouble setting up router

Make sure it is not a cross-over cable, and unplug the Ethernet cord at both ends and then re-connect. Also try a different cord. If you are doing this wireless I would recommend you using an Ethernet cord. You could also push in the little reset button on the back of the router for 45 seconds and then unplug the router then plug it back in and start over with the CD.

Unable to connect to Linksys BEFW11S4 router from new Toshiba lap

this sounds like security problems , other people have experienced problems with vista but most have been able to resolve them.

whilst connected to your router using an ethernet cable open a browser windows and type in the rounter address these
are usually one of 2 most likely yours is
192.168.1.1
and typing password as "admin" and no user name. Use your password if you have changed it earlier 2

Go to wireless tab. 3. Go to wireless security sub-tab 4. If security mode is wpa or wpa2 note down passphrase/shared key, if security mode is WEP note down wep key number 1. This will be your network key
also check other.

On the Vista laptop with the connection
Start --> Network

Click on Network and Sharing Center

if It shows a red X between my network and the Internet.

click on the Customize link (below and right of the red X)

Under location type if it was set to Public. change it
to Private. Hit Next

At that point my whole network might go down,  and
reset the router. (turned off and turned on)

After that my red X under network and sharing center
was gone. And my internet connection problem was gone.

I forgot to mention that before you shoul have turned
off all software firewalls and virus scanners. prior.

if that does not work when you are logged into the router page 192.168.1.1 check to see if their is an option to update the router software/firmware ,if their is no option then you  may have to manually downlaod the firmware from linksys and update that way .

Hope this helps if not ask for clarification on anything your unsure of.
