System Recovery for Compaq laptop

I bought this laptop used for my son. It has some issues and I'd like to restore it back to original settings, or as close as I can get. However, I did not get the recovery disks with it. Is it possible to use recovery disks from a Compaq Presario V2000- or is that doing something illegal? Thanks for any help.

Well I was cleaning up a bunch of junk they had downloaded. When I start it now it has an error message about the Mobile Intel 945 Express Chipset Family. And the screens have been flashing funny colors. I thought maybe a virus but the antivirus software says everything is clean and up to date. Any suggestions?

Using recovery disks from another model is NOT wise as this will install drivers irrelavent to the hardware in the problem laptop and cause major issues and a lot of things wouldnt work.

When laptops are purchased, they have a software utility to create your own restore disks. The best way to do what you need to do is download the media to install windows again (NOT illegal since your laptop already has a legal key), but make sure the version of windows is exactly the same as what it came with, then reinstall it and download drivers from compaqs site relevant to your model.

Also check for a recovery partition, goto my computer, see if there's a second harddrive called "recovery" or something similar, if there is one, restart the machine (backup everything first to external media), look for an option to hit a key for boot menu (ususally F11, F12 etc), and hit that (you wont get much time to hit the key!) then it will give the option to choose the boot media - choose the recovery partition and follow the prompts from there.

Hope this helped!

I need to know how to restore my Compaq Presario 2700 to factory setting because it has crashed.

If you have the original recovery disc for the laptop, then I would re-install your operational system to bring it back to factory setting. If you do not have the disc go to for customer support to see if they have the disc available.

if you still have the compaq recovery disk simply use it the same as you have done in the process, it will install all drivers as well, all of your backup might be useful depends on the file you have stored, say documents which by any means can be restored again, if you dont have the recovery disk you can download any particular device that isnt working and reinstall or update the driver from compaq's website.
