In that case it affects the file system of your hard drive that's why it fails the windows vista installation. In order to fix it you need to delete the partition of your hard drive and create a new one using a partition manager software.
If you can connect your hard drive into another computer you can perform a disk partition using the Disk Management (In Windows XP: Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Storage > Disk Management)

To help you with the procedure on "How to use Disk Management."

Using Disk Management, after creating a partition in your drive, proceed to formatting.

How to format the system?

You can completely wipe out your system by employing DBAN ( http://www.dban.org/ ) - *CAREFUL*, there is no undoing this format! Backup any important data on an external drive or unit.

Once formatted, you can reinstall your system using any OS CD/DVD (by preference, those which came with the system).

If what you're doing is trying to recover a broken OS, you may try a "recovery install" from the OS CD/DVDs before resorting to a complete format.

Windows vista installation

If you purchased it new, you can probably get a recovery disk from HP.  HP usually puts a recovery partition on one part of the disk, but if your utility program wiped that out, then you will need help from HP directly.
You can try HP's website by starting here: http://h20180.www2.hp.com/apps/Lookup?h_lang=en&h_cc=us&cc=us&h_page=hpcom&lang=en&h_client=S-A-R163-1&h_pagetype=s-001&h_query=pavilion+dv6000&submit=Go+%BB

The following discusses ordering a recovery disk: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00810334&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=1842155&rule=21883&lang=en

If the recovery parition is still intact, you might be able to recover based on this link: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&rule=21883&product=1842155&docname=c00809678#RecoverOS

Restore the PC to its original condition with the HP Recovery Manager if Windows Vista is not accessible If the PC cannot launch into Windows, it may still be possible to use the HP Recovery Manager on the hard drive to restore the computer to its original operating condition by first pressing the Power button to start the PC, and then pressing the F11 key to start the HP Recovery Manager. NOTE: Depending on the BIOS version, your computer may display multiple prompts during startup including F11 to start System Recovery. Pressing the F11 key on a computer with an HP factory image will start System Recovery even if the prompt is not displayed.
  • If the HP Recovery Manager can access the hard drive, a prompt is displayed to backup the user files before beginning the recovery. Follow any on-screen instructions.
  • If the HP Recovery Manager cannot access the hard drive to fix any system errors, use the set of recovery discs to recover the hard drive to its original condition.

Tryed replacing vista but it cant find my hard drive

If you are attempting to use your "System Recovery" or "System Restore" disk it is likely that the portion(s) of your hard drive containing files that this process may require have been erased.

In this case you only have a few options:

  • Contact your manufacture and attempt to get a full install cd, which is often very unsucessful, but it depends on your manufacture.
  • Contact Microsoft, let them know your situation and state that you have a Product Key and require a install cd. This to is not usually sucessful but its cheaper then the last option.
  • Lastly, you can purchase Vista, or any version of Widows you wish to install on your machine.
I hope this has been of some help.
Let us know if you run into any bumps.

Good luck.

P.S.: Product Key is generally located on a tag on the side of your desktop/bottom of your laptop, or in the documentation that came with it.

Insert the winxp disk and boot from that, when prompted hit any key to boot from cd.

Win xp will start to install choose to delete the partition, confirm delete.

then press enter to install to that unallocated partition, choose format to NTFS.

Follow the prompts and it has formated the hard drive and will install XP.
