This isn\'t a fault with the printer, IT IS A FAULT WITH THE WAY IT HAS BEEN SET UP! The problem is, not all of the tabs have been removed from the PHD unit inside. In order to remove these, you need to open the front cover of
the printer, move the four tabs 90 degrees and pull the whole PHD out.
You will then see the four yellow tags on the side.
Having printed with the tags in means the PHD has been potentially
damaged. If you\'re lucky, you\'ll get away with removing the tags now and
it will return to normal after about 50 pages, it not then you\'ll need a
new PHD. The reason the problem manifests itself with black first is
because the black is the most commonly used colour.

For info on removing all the tags, see here:

So after about 7 hours I did find the solution to this problem - at least for my printer. It appears that the problem is that enough toner is not getting from the cartridge to the feeder. The solution is as follows: 1. You must be able to get to the "printer tool box".
Dell 1320c prints black as light grey. Tonor - e224aeae-d99d-476e-b376-46039d9ed48a.jpg
Once there click on the "Tool Box" and go to Diagnosis > Machine Check > Dispense Motor Check (Black). Run that perhaps 5 to 10 times (check the print quality as you run each few times and the print should start to turn blacker) . When the print is full black it's fixed !!.
You can also run the "Developer Stir Mode" a few times

I replaced the black ink and the error light is on and the out of black ink light is still on. Won't print

Try it.......

Remove the print head and soak it for three 5-minute cycles in hot (~170 F) distilled water about 3/4 inch deep with continuous mild agitation. The first soak quickly turn the water black, the second end with the water a dark grey color. The hot distilled water dissolved the dried ink in the small ink passages from the cartridges to the ink ejection part of the print head.
Carefully dry the print head as per instructions, clean the electrical contacts on the printer, and placed the print head and the ink cartridges in the printer.Turn off the printer, then unplugged it for one minute. Then turn it on...and print an alignment sheet...

Dell 1320c is giving faded printing in both color and black. I've replaced two toner cartridges, tried to 'bleed' the cartirdge by printing 20 copies, toner save is turned off and there is no...

After you click print, and just before you print, go to your 'printing preferences' or 'print settings' in the popup window. From there, cycle through the tabs, and ensure that 'print quality' is NOT at draft and IS on normal or high quality. Alternatively, you change the 'print resolution' in this window, if the option is available. Resolution is usually given in 'dpi' so choose the highest 'dpi' value. This should hopefully give you darker prints

The black print on my Dell 1320C laser printer is very light (grey) in fact. I replaced the black toner at no avail. The other colors are fine.what can I do to soulve the problem. ...

It sound like you have either a very low toner density set, which would normally be set either through the control panel or the driver, or possibly the Dell Toner conservation system turned on. Here is Dells owners manual info on dealing with light print.
The toner cartridges may be low or need to be replaced. Confirm the amount of toner in each toner cartridge.
  1. Press [Printer Status], and then click the Status tab in the printer driver.
Ensure Non-Dell Toner is not selected in the Printer Maintenance tab in the Tool Box.
  1. Click the Tool Box button.
Set Toner Saving Mode to Off in the printer driver.
  1. Press [Printing Preferences], and then click the Advanced tab.
If you are printing on an uneven print surface, change the paper type setting in the printer driver. For example, change the plain paper to thick.
  1. Press [Printing Preferences], and then click the Paper Tray tab.
Verify that the correct print media is being used.
  1. See "Print Media Sizes and Support".
Ensure that eight yellow ribbons are correctly removed from the PHD (Print Head Device) unit.
  1. See "Replacing the PHD (Print Head Device) Unit" and "Installing the PHD Unit".
Ensure that the developer motor starts.
  1. Contact Dell.
Ensure that the dispense motor starts.
  1. Contact Dell.
When you are printing many images with low density, do the Toner Refresh Mode.
  1. Click the Tool Box button.
  2. Press the Start button to check the density of colors.
  3. If the print is too light, Select Refresh Mode from the list. Press the Start(1)-(4) buttons.
CAUTION: Using the Refresh Mode consumes extra toner.
  1. After you complete the Refresh Mode, select Chart Print from the list. Press the Print with A4(3) or Print with Letter(C) button for 4 Colors Configuration Chart. "Printing" appears.
    Is the problem recovered?

My Dell 1320c Colour Laser Printer prints black as grey. How can I get it to print black?

If you have an extra black toner cartridge, try installing that and see if it fixes the problem. If it doesn't make sure Toner Save Mode is off (in the print driver, under Preferences). If your copies still come out gray instead of black, you may need to replace the Print Head Unit (PHD).

Black toner replaced; now all black printing comes out faded grey

I have to ask this question of you, just to make sure this is not an issue. Are you using a factory new ink or toner cartridge?
Please consider the following:
If you are using a refilled or third party cartridges that may well be your problem. Most manufacturers build logic into their products to prevent the use of “Other Equipment Manufactured” cartridges as well as re-filled cartridges.
They do this to prevent problems from contaminated inks or toner causing problems with print quality or damaging the physical printhead or photo conductors.
If you are using factory new ink or toner cartridges, then please call the manufacturer’s Technical Support for assistance with the warranty on the cartridges

I've tryed the reset button. It does not recognize the black cartridge. I own two 1320c printers and all four new black cartridges work in the other printer.

The black prints light grey. It has new toner

Printing - Light - After - replacing - toner
Bleed the cartridge- yes bleed it, if the black is grey, print lots of BLACK, in 'greyscale' like pages of it, probably 20, I had a customer with the same problem, I am and experienced tech and I own a shop, Dell couldnt help, Dell didnt know, I figured it out by looking at the way the printer works. Enough said.

* I am a HP person* ( as far printing goes )
Personaly HP is the best, anybody, and I mean ANYBODY who builds a printer that is NETWORK capable, Puts network interface in it that is a 'dummy' interface that you can actually plug a network cable into and it lights up.... then you figure out the interface you are trying to use is dead!!, How bout a laser printer that doesnt support PCL.... they say it does..... it may 'emulate' PCL.... probably does.... but the drivers will not print DOS apps correctly.... DOS may be dead,,, but there are SOME companys still using DOS based programs..... Dataflex is one..... I am not trying to write a review, my opinion, Dell 1320c is junk.... junk..... it is the cheapest of cheapest, in design, print quality, anything..... I have 4 Dell 1320c's that i am dealing with at the moment, at 3 different companies .... I am pulling out my hair with failed print jobs, (usb) of course, are they worth buying the network interface to make them network printers???? (get away from usb connectivity issues)--- no they are not, my accounts with HP's.... no problems!!! ---- none --- actually so good, we 're-geared' a HP, total cost---- more than it was new,, more than the Dell 1320c...... BUT KEEPING THE HP is what I and the customer knew to do.... when you wear the gears out in a printer and the only thing you put into it was toner's and two drums... during it lifespan... You bet your britches thats the printer to keep.... ('twas hp4100 n)..... HP 3600n is my choice for a Dell 1320c replacement,, Ummm yea... the 3600n uses toner cartridges that are NOT remote tanks..... they are integral.
