The pictures are too big, reduce the size by compressing them using JPEG software.

Change the file format when saving can reduce the file size by up to 90%.

Open the menu settings and by reducing the resolutions on the picture format you can make the file size much smaller thereby reducing the time taken to save into the memory. But the fact remains that the picture quality will suffer as the resolution becomes lower - it will be ok to see on smaller screens but cannot have a good enlargement.

I have a Sony DCR-SR43 handycam. I am a amateur photographer. When i shoot some shots, the file size is very large (208 or so..). Is there any software to compress the file.

The size of the file depends mostly on the resolution. Higher resolution gives more detail and the picture can be printed larger without showing pixelation, but this requires more data, so the files are larger. Recent cameras offer resolutions stated in terms of 10 or 14 megapixels. That much data needs a large file to store it. Reducing the resolution in the camera settings to 5 or 3 megapixels (or less) will give you a much smaller file. In the camera, this will usually be specified in terms of pixels wide by pixels deep (e.g. 1600x1200).

You can reduce the size of a picture in a photo editing program (resize or resample), which will also reduce the resolution.

Compressing the file is not likely to help much. Usually these files are in a format (.jpg) that is already compressed. The camera may allow more than one quality of compression. You can set this to compress the pics more, but this will reduce the quality of the image and introduce more digital noise. It is also possible to increase the amount of compression when saving an edited file in a photo editor, by specifying this at the point of saving. None of these will make as large a difference as reducing the resolution by resizing.

Hi, I have Sony Cybershot DSC w320 digital camera of 14.1 MP. Can you please tell me how I can take the pictures on less Mega Pixcal so that the size of file get reduced. Thanks, Prateek

Hi,
The image size determines the size of the image file that is recorded when you take an image. The larger the image size, the more detail will be reproduced when the image is printed on large format paper. The smaller the image size, the more images can be recorded. To change the Image Size in the Camera, press and select the MENU-->Image Size-->Desired Size [(640×480)VGA or (2592×1944)5M] The quality of the VGA Image is very less when compared to the 14M.
Good Luck

Can I change the file format on a coolpix so the

Go into the Shooting Menu, select Image Mode, and select the desired image size/quality. If you want to go all the way, select 640 for 640x480 resolution (0.3 mp).

Be aware that if you do so, the pictures won't be usable for much more than email. You're certainly not going to make 4x6 prints from them. You may as well be using your cell phone, if it has a camera, instead of a 10 mp camera.

Photo resolution

Sony H1 takes photos at 72 dpi by default. But the picture quality will be good. if you want to convert it to 300dpi open the picture in adobe Photoshop and select image size and change resolution to 300 dpi. but the file size will be very high to up load. if you want to reduce the file size select the image size in adobe photoshop and reduce it according to your requirement. if my solution proves good please rate it. Regards.

My pictures come out too small when downloaded!!

Instead of going to print size, you need to head to the quality tab of your camera. Here you will find the option for 640 x 480. This size is only good though for email quality. If you want a higher quality for printing images, you need to move that resolution up.

TIP: I myself have a casio camera and i take all my pictures at the highest availible quality. You can always reduce the file size on your computer, but you can never add quality. While it may take more space on my card, it is like the old saying about dressing warmly... you can always peel layers off....

After taking 20 photos says memory card is full

You did not mention the make or model of the camera. Your symptoms seem to indicate you are using internal memory rather than the card. Card typically hold from 200-2,000 high quality photos (depending on the size of the card and the camera).

Another possibility is that you have a high end camera and are shooting in the RAW format. RAW is only for the more experienced users who post process their work. If this is the case switch to JPG.

Note reducing the picture size only makes the pictures lower quality and is only useful if you only post them on the web.

Features of each record mode...

The details for each record mode are as follows: RAW: RAW data is unprocessed image data in its original state to which white balance, sharpness, contrast, color conversion and other processes have not been applied. CAMEDIA Master can be used to display RAW data and save it in other image formats. A RAW plug-in is also available for Adobe Photoshop which also provides the ability to process images in 32-bit color depth. TIFF: This is the highest-quality mode. images are saved as uncompressed data, which is the best for printing or image processing on a computer. SHQ: This is a high quality mode using the JPEG format. Because the compression rate is very low, high quality images can be stored. HQ: This is a high quality mode using JPEG format, with medium compression. Because the compression rate is higher than SHQ, file sizes are smaller. More images can be saved to a card. The file size can be changed in the 3:2 or Enlarge size mode as well as SHQ. 3:2 Mode: Ordinarily the image aspect ratio is set to 4:3. Due to change the ratio to 3:2, the picture size becomes 2592 x 1728 so that the image can be printed without losing the image borders at a photo lab. 3:2 can be set in the TIFF, SHQ, or HQ mode. SQ1: SQ1 uses the highest compression for resolutions greater than 1600 x 1200. You can choose high compression to reduce noise or normal compression to save more images. SQ2: SQ2 uses the highest compression for resolutions less than 1600 x 1200. You can choose high compression to reduce noise or normal compression to save more images.
