Dvd plays cd but doesn't recognise dvd

I have the same problem and the drive is NOT worn out. I have run only a few CD-ROMs and never tried a DVD until recently since I have a separate DVD that I have always used for travel. Unfortunately, now my whole system is dying and the player won't read the imaging recovery disk either, though it will still read other CD-ROMs.

If you haven't made any change to software or hardware recently then your DVD Rom / Rewriter is tired and worn out. You can probably get the lense changed at a local dealer such as PC World however their PC Clinic is not known for it's speed or success rate! I would suggest a new DVD R/W.

Acer Aspire 5920G wont play dvd, it wont even recognise them!

If it recognises cd but not dvd it means the drive is faulty. There is 2 lasers one for cd and one for dvd. The dvd laser is faulty. It also means that it is not dirty lens because it reads cd's.

DVD PLAYS CD'S BUT WONT PLAY DVD'S

Aquarius0128 there are two things to consider here.. dvd's recorded on a computer need to be closed/finalized after you have recorded onto them in order to be used on a stand alone player.. they will play ok on original recorder because of the design of these machines finalizing prepares the structure of the disc so it can be recognised by other players as a dvd video disc.. you will usually see a 'finalize disc' option in your recording program

Second issue is this.. even if finalized an older (or even some modern) stand alone players will not recognise a recorded disc made on a computer or even if it can there are different formats DVD+R DVD-R and even DVD-RAM and DVD-RW (the two latter ones are rarely recognised outside a computer)
