- I have the same problem and the drive is NOT worn out. I have run only a few CD-ROMs and never tried a DVD until recently since I have a separate DVD that I have always used for travel. Unfortunately, now my whole system is dying and the player won't read the imaging recovery disk either, though it will still read other CD-ROMs. - fiannaheatheBest Solution

If you haven't made any change to software or hardware recently then your DVD Rom / Rewriter is tired and worn out. You can probably get the lense changed at a local dealer such as PC World however their PC Clinic is not known for it's speed or success rate! I would suggest a new DVD R/W.
