Sounds like you have this plugged into a circuit that has to much draw on it,or you are using an extension cord, don't use an extension cord, and see if you can figure what else is on the circuit, if nothing else is on it and you have the full 20amps then something is wrong with the motor.

What causes caravan aircon to trip circuit breaker on start up


My first guess would be that the compressor has seized. If not the compressor seizing, then I would look for a short to ground in the wiring. If you pull the cover of the AC you will most likely find that the compressor motor is plugged into a receptacle. If you can unplug or otherwise disconnect the compressor motor from its' power source and activate the thermostat to run and the circuit breaker does not trip, it is the compressor motor. If the circuit breaker trips, then it's in the wiring.

call the service co. who replaced compressor . they ether got a defective one or never replaced yours . (compressor is a motor and a pump sealed in a metal can suspended in oil on springs ) apparently yours has a broken one or more springs .allowing electrical field windings of the motor to come in contact with the case shorting out your breaker. solution new compressor!

Air compressor only builds air pressure up to about 80 psi ,then trips the breaker.

....Check and clean your Air Filter replace if necessary
....Sounds like you may have a weak breaker,motor or compressor problems
....Electrical...make sure you are getting the full either 110v or 220v depending on what your compressor motor requires.
.....Use an Clip over type AMP Gauge to test the amp loading when the motor is running at amost 0 pressure until it gets to the 80psi when it trips the breaker. You want the highest reading.
If it is over the amount of the breaker then you may have to get a larger breaker in amps or you may have motor or compressor problems.
.....Motor... check the plate on the motor to see what the amps should be and compare them against what you got from checking the wires with the clip on amp meter.
.... Compressor...check the compressor to see if it turns easy without any tight spots that might cause the amp meter to read high.

Air compressor is about 10 years old. Used for light duty work only. It trips the breaker in the box after about 1-2 seconds running. Has been plugged into same oulet never moved. Tried in different...

Your problem sounds like it is the motor giving a problem.

Unhook the belt from the compressor and run the motor by itself...check the compressor to make sure it is not dragging the motor too much making the amps go up and tripping the breaker..
If the motor runs with the belt off of the compressor, then let it run for at least an hour, then put the belt back on and try it again...if it trips again, then replace/rebuild the motor as it is faulty.
Also check the motor capacitor sometimes they fail..
If the motor still trips the breaker after removing the compressor belt..replace/repair the motor as it is faulty.

Breaker trips on unit. Fuse in house is ok. As soon as AC unit turns on it trips the breaker outside next to unit.


you have a 'direct short' - most likely the compressor or fan motor.
you could isolate it to one or the other by (be sure all power is off) disconnecting one of them and turning the unit back on.
For example if the fan motor is shorted and you disconnect it - the breaker will hold and not trip and the compressor will come on - which will tell you that you need to replace the fan motor.
If you do this and it still trips the breaker then reconnect the fan motor and disconnect the compressor and try that.
If the breaker holds and the fan motor runs then you know the compressor is shorted.
Note: the fan motor can be replaced with not a lot of trouble depending on how mechanically inclined you are - but the compressor will take a qualified serviceperson.

Kenmore central air conditioning unit tripping breaker each time we turn it on.


The breaker tripping when you turn the unit on indicates a 'direct short' and 99 out of a 100 times the short will be either the outside fan motor or the compressor itself. Either way - you will need a qualified serviceperson to diagnose this problem correctly and make the needed repairs.
Best solution is to call AC person.
However, here's a good way you can get it down to either the fan motor or the compressor.
(1) With all power OFF - disconnect the wires to the fan motor
(2) turn on AC unit (a) if breaker trips it means the compressor is probably the shorted component. (b) if breaker DOES NOT trip and the compressor runs - it means the fan motor is shorted.
(3) If breaker tripped with the fan motor disconnected meaning the compressor is probably shorted you can then (with ALL POWER OFF) 'disconnect the wires going to the compressor' and re-connect the fan motor wires. Turn on power - and if fan motor runs (with compressor wires off) you know it's the compressor that is shorted.
After all this you will now know which of the two (compressor or fan motor) is shorted.
If it's the fan motor you can with 'limited mechanical experience' change the motor yourself, but if it's the compressor you will need to call a serviceperson because of the expertise needed to replace the compressor.

Everytime my central air unit kicks on my circuit breaker trips. It didn't do this last year or even earlier this year


A circuit breaker 'tripping' everytime the AC unit kicks on 'most always' indicates a direct short (somewhere in the condensing unit), although it is possible that the breaker itself is bad - (but not likely).

Usually the cause of this 'short' will be - either the condenser motor in the condensing unit (outside unit) or the compressor - also in the condensing unit.

If you're mechanically inclined - and "very careful" around electricity - there is a fairly simple way to find out which component is causing the short.

Step 1 - Make sure the condensing unit (outside unit) is completely disconnected (electrically) , i.e. pull the fuses/turn off circuit breaker on outside unit and turn off thermostat.

Step 2 - disconnect the condenser motor (this is the outside fan motor). Note: when you disconnect the wires of the condenser motor "be sure" you mark/write their location, and wrap them in electric tape.

Step 3 - start the AC unit. If the breaker trips again you can pretty much rest assured it's the compressor that is shorted.

To prove it (without a doubt) - go to next step.

Step 4 - "be sure circuit breaker and thermostat is turned off" - and - 'reconnect' the condenser motor - and - then disconnect the compressor wires (mark wires and tape them).

Step 5 - Start AC.

If breaker doesn't trip - you know it's the compressor that is shorted.

If breaker 'does' trip again - then it's possible the breaker itself is bad (not likely) or there is a 'short' in the condensing unit's "wiring" somewhere (not likely).

My guess is that either the condenser motor or compressor is shorted.

try running up this motor when its not installed on the compressor,, if it still blows the trips the motor is faulty,, if it runs ok, but hums when reconted to the compressor the compressor if far to tight for the motor to turn the compressor,,,you can not reset the points in a breaker trip they trip at a set curent if the motor is pulling more amps than the trip is set for it will trip the trip to turn off the curent, the motor will pull far more amps than it should if its over loaded thats why its humming its trying to spin up it but cant so it just keeps pulling more and more amps till the trip cuts out

Air compressor flips breaker before it will start?


Air compressors tend to draw more power as they age, however, will not trip breaker unless some malfunction. Here are some simple tests. Unplug compressor and turn the pump by hand, you may have to remove a cover to do this. It should turn freely; any resistance could be failing bearing (would make noise) unloader/check valve leaking allowing back pressure to pump, or failed start capacitor/start winding. Easy test for checkvalve. With pressure in tank loosen discharge hose at tank and check for air leak. Check valve should hold pressure in tank. Replace as needed. Failed capacitor/s will cause high amp draw. Remove from circuit and test. UF reading should be within 95% of printed rating. Finally, most air compressor motors have two windings, start and run. Power to windings is controlled by flyball switch inside rear of motor. This switch has contacts that can stick in start position and cause high amp draw. Examine windings for signs of overheating. Copper windings generally have color of new penny. Very dark brown windings bad news. Gook luck

Tripping the circuit breaker means that something is shorted out. A fan motor or the compressor, most likely. Disconnect the compressor or turn the thermostat up so high the compressor doesn't start. If the breaker still trips, the fan motor or its capacitor are the problem. If the breaker stays on, the compressor or its capacitor are causing the problem.
