Question about Oster 78950-100

1 Answer

My 78950-100 will not cut my dogs hair

My 78950-100 will not "enter" the dog's hair. I have a cocker spaniel with curly semi long hair and would like to shave him down. The clippers slide over the hair. but don't cut much. I was trying to find out what size blade it has (it only says Oster) and can I replace it? I have heard a #10 blade should do the job.The problem happens since new, I don't think is the trimmer (seems to work fine), just the blade is not the right one for his hair.

Difference between English and American Cocker Spaniels

They are two different breeds; they should not be interbred.
If it says in your AKC papers "Cocker Spaniel" it is American.
Go to ECSCA.org to see pictures of English Cockers. The American cockers have a shorter muzzle, rounder eyes, they are smaller. Their ancestors were the English Cockers, but the American breeders started breeding smaller dogs and in the 1900s the two breeds separated because of the differences.

=====================

There are many differences between the American and English Cocker Spaniel. The English Cocker Spaniel is slightly larger than the American Cocker. The most obvious difference can be seen in the head shapes. you ever see a dog that looks like a big Cocker with a goofy long nose, you're probably looking at an English Cocker.. Compared to the English Cocker, the American Cocker's skull has a distinctly domed skull, as well as a deep pronounced stop and more clearly defined eyebrows. Also the American's lips tend to hang down farther and more loosely, and its eyes are slightly larger and set more to look straight ahead than of the English Cocker Spaniel. Finally the American Cocker has a more profuse coat than the English Cocker.

I was shaving my dog using oster ultra cordless clipper, and suddenly the clipper is not cutting hair instead it grabs hair. I opened it and clean out hair under blade, but unfortunately, i did not help.

With most clippers, after an amount of use they need to be cleaned then oiled. Most sets come with some amount of oil for your clippers. Otherwise you can purchase it separately. This should fix the problem.

Difficulty shaving Spanish Water Dog

The biggest issue with clipping animals (except sheep which use completely different clippers) is that once you have sharpened blades, you need to go slow and keep then blades oiled and cooled. The KOOL spray by oster works great and the clippers you are using are a good reliable brand and model. When clipping my cocker/schnauzer cross, I have a 1/2 inch guard on it (have to use a 30 or 40 blade with the guards) and it takes about an hour. I stop every 10 minutes or so to let them cool down, spray and oil them.
