Question about Heating & Cooling

A water mess in my 8 year old Aprilair 550 humidifier. The water goes into the pad and is blown right through and it splashes on the inside of the unit wall and goes down to the floor. The drain that is connected to the unit cannot catch all that water and it is not designed for this messy situation that would harm the furnace if I were to use the unit, which obviously I am not. The pad is the appropriate one and is installed properly with the black mark at the top. The unit is connected to the warm air duct and warm air goes through the pad very rapidly but this has never been a problem. Ihave the original bracket for the pad including the top tray which distributes the water accross the pad. There is a yellow plastic fitting to which the water supply is connected. Before installing the pad I shut down the furnace and the unit itself. As soon as the air starts to blow the the water goes right through the pad in large drpos ( as opposed to a mist).

There is no mechanism at all as you have described, to control the airflow.

Tonight I will try to check out your idea and if necessary change my old style humidistat.

It has also been suggested to me to measure the rate of inflow of water. It should take no more,no less than 5 minutes to produce a gallon , according to an Aprilaire 1 800 number . Also, it should take no more than 6 minutes for the water to go through the pad. I have yet to take these measurements. Do you think that this makes sense ? Consider that this the first time I have had this problem.

If you put the right pad in an aprilaire replacement pad the water should be running down the inside of the pad and never make it throught the outside when the blower is running. Make sure the top and bottom parts of the bracket that holds the pad in are clean on the top bracket the holes are down the center and have a "V" grove in the make sure the groove is clean so the water can run down the center of the pad. Also make sure the pad is tight to the bracket there is 2 slots in the side bracet the hold the top bracket tight to the pad make sure that both side click into the groove on the side bracket you may have to push the top down hard to get the side into the groove.

Your humidity level control is set way too high then or the control is defective,is it the old style or the newer electronic read-out that shows you the humidity level,if not change it over and this will solve your problems

Hi,
It sounds like you have too much air flow through the humidifier...Is there a chance that you bumped a damper when changing the pad... obivously you have way more than you need and actually you just want a small amount to "bypass" through there... There should be a small arm sticking out5 the side of the duct from the supply to the humidifier, turn that back a bit to slow down the air flow.. Stright with the pipe is full on and perpendicular to the pipe is full off.

Make sure the new pad you installed is in the right position. The pad is marked with a black dot about the size of a quarter. This end should be up for proper water flow through the pad.I fwater flow is being restricted at the pad the vibrating nosie that you are hearing is the dry portion of the pad vibrating agaist the platic housing of the humidifier. This noise stops once the pad has absorb enough water in this area of the pad.

It is a bypass humidifer the pad in it should last a couple of years, the water runs over the pad and air pulls moisture off the pad. Putting it into the home. Make sure the damper is open for proper air flow.

Power is off to aprilaire 550

The Aprilair Hum. donot have a restart button. All there is there is just a 24VAC Solenoid that opens and lets the water flow throu a tube. Check your humidistat, check your wire going to the furnace control board and also your current sensing relay if you have one.
