I never replaced the chip on the bottom of the cartridge. Also, I have used a new cartridge which didn't work either. Apparently a failure of these printers to print in black is common judging by the things I see on line. I think the problem is more in the computerized workings of the printr as I had this problem before. Then I thought I downloaded something from the internet and the black ink started working. I'm not sure that I did download a driver or if that had anything to do with anything. But it started printing again. Then all of a sudden it stopped working again. Perhaps I changed a printer setting and then it stopped working. Anyway I don't believe it is a bubble. Is there something else

I don't think there is anything wrong with the black ink cartridge. I think it is something in the software. I think it happened again this time after I changed a printing setting. I have seen on line that others have had this problem.

I've been trying to find out why the black ink cartridge doesn't print. My feeling is that is in the software because it will print just fine, then quit altogether then be fine again

Hello, Pat.

Sounds to me that the black print head needs to be cleaned.

From HP Support:

Hope this helps.

More than likely you have a problem with your print head and not your cartridge. If you are using an aftermarket cartridge, it could cause this problem. It could have dried out, got clogged up or a piece of jammed paper might have become stuck on the print head. Run the cleaning cycle and the feature that will prime a new ink cartridge (this is included in your HP software) a few times. When you replace a cartridge it will have to be primed. Otherwise the print head requires replacement

Hi,
Sounds it’s the case of air bubble in cartridge. You need to know if the chip on the bottom of the cartridge in a small recess was reset or replaced. If it was then you need to check if there is an air bubble trapped in the egress hole (where the ink comes out of the cartridge and into the printer, small silver circle on bottom) The label can be sliced on one side where the two parts of the cartridge body meet and then flipped to one side. Pull out the ink bad and frame, carefully. Do not rupture the bag, and look to see if there is an air bubble in the tube that stands up. If there is you can use a syringe and needle to draw it out. You may now also have an air bubble in your supply line that may need purging, save that for the pros if this doesn't fix you problem.

Try Cleaning the Cartridges manually and automatically.
For the cartridge clean it with a damp lint free cloth and also for the printheads wher eyour gonna be inserting the cartridges.
Follow these steps do do the automatic aligning and cleaning:
Click Start and then go to Printers and Faxes (XP), Printers(Vista), Devices and Printers(Win 7)
1. Right Click on your printer Icon 2. Go to Printing Preferences 3. Click the Features Tab 4. At the bottom of the window you will see Printer Services or Device Services. Click on it. 5. Choose Align Printheads on the list.

For Cleaning the Printheads, Instead of choosing Align Printer choose Clean Printheads.
I hope this helped.
Try Printing Again. I hope I was able to solve your problem. :)

The print head may be blocked.
Run the cleaning cycle a few times on the machine.
This can be done through the software drivers loaded on your computer.
If this does not help, you will need to replace the black print head.

I only print black text but color cart. runs out on my officejet pro k5400

That's because your'e printer is set to use color cart. only.

Right click printer from "printers" under "control panel" and select properties. Now select device settings and you will be able to change setting of cartridges there.

good luck

OfficeJet Pro K5400...ink cartridge

Er, NO.
The answer to the above question is clearly misleading.
If you consult the documentation for your HP K5400, which can also be found online, you will find that the printer cartridge lights also blink when the print heads require replacing.
If you have replaced the cartridge and the light still flashes, this is the most common solution. Replace the print heads.
Unfortunately because the printer is badly designed, there is no way of indicating this, and you will have troubles if you attempt to get the HP Toolbox or any other diagnostic tools working.
Good luck!

This printer uses Printheads. Print a quality diagnostics page from tools in the setup menu. If there are lines (or no color) in the blue box then replace the C/M printhead.
