I would uninstall and reinstall all drivers if you still have the original manufacturer cd, if not go to the website.. i had a similar issue but i got it to finally read the dvd's again.. if you changed your os system then it could be a compatibility issue..
you may also want to check the properties on the drive you are speaking of and make all the settings go to the default ones.. goto my computer and look for your drive, then right click on it to see properties and options to adjust settings to your drive..
it may not be dead yet, especially if it's not old.. hope this helps
