Drives use seperate lasers for CD and DVD media, so DVD can be dead while CD is working fine.
CD’s are single layered and spin at a slower speed than DVD’s, the laser needs to be brighter for DVD’s so the laser diodes will burn out sooner. Double layered DVD’s are first to go, then single layered, then CD's. They may show they are on their way out by jumping or skipping ahead when in use.

It's probably worn out and tired.

I would uninstall and reinstall all drivers if you still have the original manufacturer cd, if not go to the website.. i had a similar issue but i got it to finally read the dvd's again.. if you changed your os system then it could be a compatibility issue..

you may also want to check the properties on the drive you are speaking of and make all the settings go to the default ones.. goto my computer and look for your drive, then right click on it to see properties and options to adjust settings to your drive..

it may not be dead yet, especially if it's not old.. hope this helps

I can't play dvds or open burn dvd media. what do you think i should do?

one problem i see is that your DVD drive is not properly cleaned or maintained. if that is so, you can just buy a CD, DVD lens cleaner and let it run onto your drive but if if this fails, maybe the lens is actually damaged. there are also DVD RW combo drives that reads only CDs after a long time use. this is cause by the lens' capability to detect DVDs or CDs played. as time goes by, lenses wears out.i suggest that if this is your problem, try to buy a new drive for your PC.

My cd drive on my compaq desktop plays cd's fine but will not play dvd's.what can i do it's a windows xp home

You can only play CDs on a CD drive. In order to play DVDs you need a DVD drive. A DVD drive can play both CDs & DVDs.

Hope this info helped you. Good Luck! :-)

Dvd burner not detected

Sorry, but that model is not a DVD writer. It can only write and rewrite CD's. It can only read DVD's.

Here is a page with specs:

Sony CRX310S Specs

Note under DVD>Write DVD it says N/A. (Not applicable.)

I want to play mini cds in a standard slot drive in laptop.

You should notice in your cd tray a smaller cutout in the center. That is specifically for mini cds.

LG super multi drive identified as CDROM by Windows XP

First, thank you for the excellent description. I wish more FixYa clients would provide complete information like that.

Unless you are having problems, I wouldn't worry about the product designation in XP since it's LG drive that is identifying it as such during XP's device discovery routine. Your new LG drive can handle all of the different DVD rewritable formats - i.e. DVD-RAM, DVD+RW, and DVD-RW - so it appears that it is just using the first as its designator.

In my laptop, my LG DVD writer is designated as follows in Device Manager:

HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T10N ATA Device

LG describes it as a "Slim DVD Super-Multi Drive". I've had no problems with it, and it has worked flawlessly to burn CDs and DVDs.
