HI Johnboy ... many thanks for your in put, story so far, Ive down loaded the driver for the Monitor, installed it via control panel themes etc, made sure it installed properly and now it is in the list of Monitors also and on the monitor driver window as default.

Downloaded the latest update to my graphics card

Have altered the screen slider but all it does is make the desktop icons smaller or larger, the back ground wallpaper stays the same size, nothing alters all circles are eliptical and this includes pictures as well ....everything ... got to be the graphics card ...what do you think?

Hi there,

Set the resolution to match the new screen.

In XP, Go to control panel, display, settings tab and change the screen resoution slider. If you have a regular shape screen (not widescreen) choose 1280 by 1024 pixels. If yours is a widescreen, choose 1280 by 768 pixels.

Remove any speakers or magnets that you might have near the monitor as they can cause visual distortion on your monitor screen.

You may want to open it up and inspect the caps (bad caps with bulging tops) as shown in my pictures here:

Bad DC filter caps can cause alot of strange symptoms.

You obviously have some technical background which is going to help alot.
What I need to know is the part number from your video board firstly. I may have a schematic here for it, though there are about 5 types for this one model.
Secondly, since you appear to have electrical knowledge I will also assume you have a half decent multimeter.
With the unit powered on, (you will need to connect the video cable and have the pc running so it dosn't go into standby)measure the voltage on the connector between the powerboard and video card. In particular we need to check the +5v line to see if it is fluctuating even a small amount. This +5v powers the panel itself, so any fluctuations will cause inherent video problems.

If possible, could you also submit a photo of the entire video board, and another of the power board just for my reference.

HELP!! ACER AL1711 On and Off forever

Most of these have inverters that power the LCD monitor more than likey that is what happened! These can be repaired, but you will get charged an nominal amount. Better off getting a new one! You better get one soon, 17" monitors will soon be out, they will no longer be sold as the standard will soon be 19".
