Question about Western Digital My Book World Edition 1TB Remote Access Storage System

1 Answer

Cannot access WD NAS - need help - please ?

I am using WD1000HINC as my music NAS - connected by Lan to Netgear router and Linn DS , all so well but one day , might be my mistake , did not know yet , I cannot access my stored Music files , my Laptop - Vista OS - "computer page" I can see "WD My Book World EDition (public)" there , but double click icon gave me the following error "Window cannot access \\192.168.72.101\\Public .

I do not know what went wrong , I had follow instruction to assign IP address 192.168.72.102 to this NAS , on opening the Linn Config. I can clearly see that it is listed and IP read 192.168.72.102 . it is just that I cannot store or take out any music files from the NAS .

I had tried connect directly from NAS to laptop by Lan cable , but the result was the same , no access to any files .

I tried to defrag the disc , yes , Ok , it allowed defragmentation , just I cannot access any store files , nor can I store in any new files .

Any helps from you all expert would be much appreciated , this bothers me very much , the NAS is new , just 2 weeks ago .

I would say that you should re-install the Western Digital My Book.

Hope this helps!

The CD is not available for installation is it necessary? I have all of the cable if the Yellow cable connects to the cable router what does the white cable on the wireless router connect to. Thank...

If the cables supplied have RJ45 connectors then they are used for connecting and configuring the wireless settings in Netgear router and to connect the Netgear to the DSL modem foe Internet access.
Most likely the color of the cables is not important.
To configure the wireless settings, connect a cable from one of the LAN ports (not the WAN/Internet port) to the LAN port on your computer. You may remove this cable after configuring the wireless settings if you want to connect to the Netgear by wireless only. You need to connect other computers to the Netgear's LAN port with a cable if they do not have wireless cards installed in these computers.

The other LAN cable is used to connect the Netgear WAN/Internet port to the DSL modem so you computers can connect to the Internet via the Netgear router.

Follow these instructions to configure the Netgear router.

I lost my cd for setup ipls help me this is my serial number of my netgear 1um8977f03f04tnx

To Configure the Router with Internet Access

Connect to one of the wireless router/access point's LAN Ethernet ports, turn off its DHCP server, and give the wireless router a static IP on your LAN:

  1. Connect a PC directly to a LAN port on the wireless router with an Ethernet cable.
  2. Power on the wireless router/access point.
  3. Reboot the PC.
  4. Log in to the wireless router though a browser. (Usually 192.168.1.1, with User Name = admin and Password = password, unless you changed them from the defaults).
  5. Go to the LAN IP menu and disable the wireless access point's DHCP server by unchecking Use router as DHCP server.
  6. Select LAN IP, and change the IP to 192.168.1.99.
  7. Click Apply to save the settings. You will lose the connection to the wireless router/access point , since its IP changed.
  8. Log in to the wireless router/access point with the URL: http://192.168.1.99
  9. Connect one of the wireless router's Local (LAN) ports to your existing network

Need basic step-by-step instructions on how to install my router.

  5. Go to the LAN IP menu and disable the wireless access point’s DHCP server by unchecking Use router as DHCP server.
  6. Select LAN IP, and change the IP to 192.168.1.99.
  7. Click Apply to save the settings. You will lose the connection to the wireless router/access point , since its IP changed.
  8. Log in to the wireless router/access point with the URL: http://192.168.1.99
  9. Connect one of the wireless router's Local (LAN) ports to your existing network.
This completes the wireless router/access point configuration.
  • You can now log in to the wireless router/access point at its new address of http://192.168.1.99 and configure wireless features such as WEP and Access Control List
  • UPnP, DMZ, Port Forwarding, and Port Triggering are not used on the wireless router/access point, and it doesn't matter how they are configured.
  1. Configure the LAN IP address to be within the same subnet as your PCs.
    • Take care not to use an IP address already being used.
    • Limit the number of addresses in the DHCP range and assign an IP address outside of the range to the router you want to use as the Access Point.
  2. Disable DHCP on the wireless router/access point.
  3. Connect one of the LAN ports on the wireless router/access point to a LAN port on the Router.
  4. Configure the SSID and any security settings on the wireless PCs to match the wireless router/access point's SSID and security settings.
a. SSIDs must be the same on all wireless devices. (These are case-sensitive: netGEAR is not the same as NETGEAR.)
b. Tip: Make sure the wireless PCs can connect before configuring WEP, WPA-PSK, or other wireless encryption.

Problems with netgear wireless router

picolas and nannysboy,

You can setup your router any way you like after accessing it. You don't need software for NetGear. All you have to do to access the control panel is:
  1. Open your browser.
  2. Type in this ip address - http://192.168.1.1
  3. Configure the router as you see fit. It's fairly simple and has built in help guides.
If you cannot connect by wireless, do the above while connected by a LAN cable (looks like a telephone cable, only fatter and wider).

The router should be connected as follows:
  1. WAN port directly to cable/dsl modem.
  2. Any port (1-4) running out to your computer.
Please let me know if this helps. Good luck!
