I just got a IBM Think Pad from a friend and they had windows 98, but I need to put a wireless internet card on it but 98 is not compatible they said I need XP or higher. They charge 155 to put it on but I don't have an extra 155 dollars to spend. Can't figure out how to download it to CD from my home computer. Any Suggestions????

I'm not sure solution #1 is very explanatory, so....

IF you want to install XP on your computer, Windows XP will load most of the drivers you need automatically.
For the drivers that are specific to your HP pavilion
you will be able to download device drivers from HP website
or, request a driver CD

When XP is installed [assuming you or someone can do that]
you can:
Go to the 'My Computer' icon [right-click]
Choose:

  • 'Properties'
  • Then Choose 'Hardware'
  • Finally, choose 'Device Manager'
Here you will have a list of all your hardware
If you have any drivers that need to be installed, there should be
a yellow (?) question mark by the name of the hardware

Most devices/hardware will be handled by XP SP2
The default drivers will be loaded automatically
For example, your keyboard:

Above you see the window that opens if I double-click on
the 'Keyboard' icon.

For XP to function, you only have to worry about the ones
with the yellow (?) question mark

Or, if you want to add a specific driver, like a Video or Sound driver, but you don't see a yellow (?) question mark
you can still install/update the driver at the 'driver' tab
[second tab in the picture above]

If you need more specific help I can do that too

    Alternate *Free Solution

There is another solution you may consider if you only need XP
to run a few applications that are not compatible with Vista

There is something offered by Microsoft called ' Virtual PC 2007 '

This will allow you to install a second version of Windows on your
computer without having to lose Vista

You will basically be able to run Vista and you can switch to XP
to use the applications that are not compatible with Vista

You can download the program for free from Microsoft
and install it on your Vista system.
Once you do that, you have options of how much space you want to use, how much memory you need, depending on which OS you want to install
Here is a shot of the menu so you get an idea:

Above in the picture Windows XP is being chosen and the default
    DRIVERS will be loaded automatically

Can windows XP be install on HP Pavilion dv7-1132nr with Vista OS

Yes, You can dual boot Windows XP and Vista but you'll be having problem finding drivers if you install Windows XP on this computer since Windows XP supported drivers aren't available on Hp download page. HP has only Windows Vista and Windows 7 drivers for this System.
Hope this helps.
Good Luck.
Thanks for using FixYa.

Hp pavilion dv 6500 nvidia drivers win xp

Hi lobi1 !
You haven't gave the exact model of your computer. I assume it's the Pavilion dv6500ew. If this is the case, the driver you need can be downloaded straight from the Nvidia website here: http://us.download.nvidia.com/Windows/179.48/179.48_notebook_winxp_32bit_beta.exe
Best of luck, omerk

Downgrade to XP

Looks like they do not have very many drivers listed for XP on their site, but all of them (obviously) for Vista. I would recommend you not downgrade to XP with that particular laptop. Sorry!

IE 7

Yes you can upgrade your Internet Explorer to IE7 (assuming you have IE6 right now)

You can download and install IE7 from Windows updates or go to the Windows Support Site to download it at http://support.microsoft.com

Only upgrade to IE7. Do not download and install IE8 Beta. It is still in testing. IE7 will not cause any problem with your HP Pavilion.
