Question about Sony Televison & Video

1 Answer

I have Sony KP57HW40. Suddenly one day, when turned on, the picture started to fade and turned blue. It does it ever since. The audio is OK. Is there a fix for this condition?

Picture turns solid blue. Prior to that, I have seen the white (curved) streaks on the dark portions of the screen while picture was stillok. Once it turns blue it apears solid.

  • mil-bmar Feb 04, 2010

Just tried it again. TV does not *******. When I turn it on, picture comes ok. Than it starts getting dominant blue hue going more and more blue untill it becomes solid blue with no streaks. The process lasts cca 5 minutes. Finaly, the pic is solid blue while audio is unafected. I can also change channels. mm

TV does not shut off !

  • mil-bmar Feb 04, 2010

How do I go abou treplacing the blue tube? Are they readily available?

  • mil-bmar Feb 04, 2010

No menu! Just a solid blue screen. And when I change channels,I don't know what channel is on.

By the way, you said that it is most likely 'blue tube defective'. I would have thought that if blue was defective, the blue would be missing and that the screen would be lacking blue rather than turning solid blue.

    Thanks, mm

Thanks for the info on tube. I will check on the availability.

I am an electronic engineer preety handy and practical. I believe that I can do the work WITH GOOD INSTRUCTIONS unless if the task requires special equipment. So if the task requires common tools (screwdrivers, multimetar, pliers etc...) I believe that I can give it a try. Are there instructions about replacing tubes and adjusting convergence without having to use dedicated equipment and tools?

  • mil-bmar Feb 04, 2010

I really appreciate chatting with you. It has been enlightening and encouraging that I don't need to look for the equipment. I checked on the tube already. Found one source where the model match up to the last digit (It is 87336470 vs 873364705 that you suggested). It may be it. I will download the instructions and check them out before I purchase it. I may call again if I get stuck.

    Thanks for all so far.

    Two possible cause of problem.
Either Focus Block is defective (mounted on lower front in TV near tubes) or Blue Tube got defective and causing solid blue screen.
If blue tube got defective then usually TV shuts off with blinking red standby light. I'm not sure about your TV shuts off or not.

OK, that means blue tube is defective and need to be replaced.

TV does not shut off !
    =============================================

Its ok, as I said, usually TV shuts off in this kind of problem because high bright screen (either blue or green or red) consume more current that activates protection circuit inside to turn it off.

Do you still can see Menu in solid blue screen?

    ==================================================================

Tube replacement in rear projection tv is job of qualified tech as it requires convergence adjustment later to get correct converge picture.
I do not know how handy you are with electronics stuff repair.
TV is 2001 model and part number of blue tube is appended below...
    873364705... CRT 07MVC41 (B) - L (VM) (57HW40)

Need to search to find out tube is available some where.

Well if blue tube filament got fuse or stop electron emission (that produce light/ image) then you will be missing blue color in picture.
But problem is just opposite of that, blue tube becomes out of control because its cathode gets short with grid (these are internal parts of tube) and causing full emission of electron and resulted solid blue screen where as rest of two tubes are still working normally/ controlled.
Take off back of TV and observe it what I'm saying about tubes.

Nice to know that you are an Electronics Engineer.
No special/ dedicated tools are required to replace tube or to adjust convergence after tube replacement.
TV remote will work to perform adjustment and usual tools are enough to take out old tube and put new one.
I would recommend to have service manual oft this tv that has all necessary exploded views, convergence adjustment procedure and many more info.
You can download free copy from HERE, download all 6 files and unzip with winrar software to get pdf file.
Hope these info will help you.
    Thanks.

I have a kp57hw40 sony tv and the scren it flashs

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

The picture on my Sony KP57WS500 is starting to fade to blue after being on a short period of time. ANY IDEAS?

Good Day;
A blue picture after it's been on for a bit is normally one of several things. The most common for your Sony is the CRT, tube, the second most common problem is the blue CRT 'IC'(chip). The IC is located is on the blue crt board.
The best way to determine this is to remove the speaker grill(on front of TV), then inner panel, the blue tube will be on your right hand side. Remove that little board at the end of the tube.THIS AFTER YOU HAVE UNPLUGGED THE POWER FROM THE WALL. Plug TV back in turn TV on. If TV comes on with picture and there is no blue in the picture, The tube is bad, if TV turns off it's the IC.
Good Luck, BI.
