Question about Mitsubishi VS-60703 60" Rear Projection Television

2 Answers

Hello, I am thinking of taking a friend tv that he wants to give me but it is not working. It is a Mitsubishi VS-60703 60in and he says that as soon as you turn it on, it turns its self right back off. What could be the problem with this, and can it just be a burned out bulb that would be an easy fix? Thanks, Justin

I have done some tv repair, but don't know how involved this repair would be if I have to replace the power supply? Do you have any idea what the cost of mateials would be if the power supply has to be replaced?

    Thanks,

    Justin

Hello, I am thinking of taking a friend tv that he wants to give me but it is not working. It is a 2000 Mitsubishi VS-60703 60in and he says that as soon as you turn it on, it turns its self right back off. What could be the problem with this, and can it just be a burned out bulb? If this is a power supply board what would be the cost in fixing it myself?

    Thanks, Justin

Two suggestions:

1.) It is a 1998 model--it may or may not have the self check feature. When it shuts off press both the Menu and Input buttons on the front of the set for at least 5 seconds and release both--if it has the self check the power light should blink an error code--most common is 2, a pause and 2, and it will repeat the error several times.

2.) Do a visual look at the front few inches of all the boards (there is an inspection plate on the front behind the speaker cloth grill). Look for any signs of Glycol; it is a coolant used to cool the face of all three tubes and these sets have a history of it leaking out and getting on the circuit boards.

If you see it--it is a clear liquid and VERY TOXIC--do not touch it. It will short things out and solder connections or parts will be discolored or look like coroaded metal. Sometimes it will be white looking or like model airplane glue.

If you find signs of this it is the end of the set as you would not only have to clean it away and repair all damage it has done but you would also have to remove whichever picture tube or tubes is leaking and reseal them etc.

Let me know what you find--I have seen a lot of these with Glycol problems--use a flashlight and look carefully.

Try what I suggested--NO CIRCUIT BOARDS FOR THIS SET ARE AVAILABLE FROM MITSUBISHI- whatever problem it has will have to be found and parts replaced IF it is even repairable.

Hi Justin,

Thanks for using FixYa. From what you have described it seems that this might have happened due to over-voltage. Please check the power supply unit for swollen/bulged capacitors and burnt wires/components on the power supply board of the TV. The reason it wont turn on could also be due to the power supply going bad and you might have to replace the board completely. Please make sure to turn off and unplug the TV for at least 1 hour (this will drain off current from all components especially capacitors) before you perform any repairs. Also note that the TV consists of very high voltages even when it is in OFF condition. All this is only recommended if you have electrical expertise and know how to solder/re-solder components.

Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.

Thanks

    Hi Justin,

Thanks for your reply. If you want to repair it yourself you'll need a soldering iron, solder, voltmeter and a power supply board. I think its better to replace the board completely however you can check the board if only the capacitors are bad then replacing the capacitors would be nice. If you do it yourself the repair should cost you around $200 depending on the parts that have gone bad. Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.

    Thanks

    Hello justin,

As I have advised you power not turning on could be due to the power supply going bad nothing else. Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.

    Thanks

Hello I cannot turn my tv on. We have tried several locations in the house, but the green power button flashes on and then goes off.

Power suppy issues most likely.

These older style tv's do have lots of surface mount stuff that occasionally develops breaks that cause power up issues.

You need to find someone with TV experience who will do an at home check of your set. My friend got a guy who moonlights to do it for a couple hundred bucks a few years back. I think thats the best solution for the unit at a reasonable cost.

Good luck and be careful.

First you can safely take off back and look for Screen controls&Focus, Gently turn up the 3 screen controls this will add light to picture, but you need to evenly turn up, the 3 colors are red, blue, green. the other 3 knobs are for focus. Do not turn them if you do you will need to realign the focus also. And if this doesn't help then there is a high voltage capacitor leaky in the flyback area.
