Apple has a variety of 'beeps' (sound) and 'blinks' (lights) for both computers and monitors. Your 3 beeps (wild guessing here) could be as noted in this link below ... which will also steer you in the right direction. Note too, that blinking lights - can have a pattern (3 blinks: short-short-long, for example). These also have specific diagnostic meanings and you might make a note before searching.

Link to some ref on blinks and beeps is here (a paste follows this note too):

For future reference:

Power-On Self-Test Beep Definition - Part 1 - http://support.apple.com/kb/TA43884

Power On Self-Test Beep Definition - Part 2 - http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n58442

The power on self-test resides in the ROM of the computer. This test runs whenever the computer is turned on after being fully shut down (the power-on self-test does not run if the computer is only restarted).

If a fault is detected during the test, you will not hear a normal startup chime. Instead, the system will beep as explained below. If you experience one of these beeps, you may call your Apple Authorized Service Provider for additional troubleshooting assistance.

1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable

In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.

You can also run Apple Hardware test from your original installer disc. Sometimes with RAM it is just easier to pull units and test them individually.

Playstation 3 not starting up?

Are you plagued by the problem of your Playstation 3 not booting up properly?

Got a screen with just a background and no icons?

Seeing a wavy line and nothing else?

This is the tip for you!

This is a problem with the Playstation 3 software becoming corrupt. It is very easy to fix if you follow my simple steps.

Please note, this method will erase your hard drive so any save games you had will be lost. All your online trophies will be preserved.

Step 1.

Turn your Playstation 3 off into standby mode (red light on)

Step 2.

Press and hold the power button. The Playstation 3 will beep when you first press it, then beep again 5 seconds later and then beep once more and turn off back into standby mode (red light on). You must now release the power button.

Step 3.

Press and hold the power again. The Playstation 3 will beep when you first press it, beep again 5 seconds later then there will be 2 quick beeps together. When you hear these 2 quick beeps release the power button.

Step 4.

Your Playstation 3 will now start up with a screen asking you to connect a controller via USB. Connect your controller and then press the PS button.

Step 5.

A menu will now be displayed on screen. Select option 5 "Restore PS3 System". This will then ask you to confirm that you wish to go ahead with the system restore. Accept whatever the Playstation 3 says.

The Playstation 3 will now go through the system restore process and re-install the system software back to out of the box status. You will have to set your user name, date and time and network settings again.

Once you have completed the above, the Playstation 3 will restart and spring back to life again!

I hope this helps all of those out there who are suffering this problem.

My gateway laptop nv series screen wont turn on when i boot up my laptop

you must take note to the beep of you laptop. when you turn the laptop op it should make a single beep sound. if not then in means you need to replace you cpu (central processing unit} or known as a processor. thy tend to blow wen the cpu dose not get serviced. the thermal compound on the laptop cpu must be removed properly and reapplied every 3-6 mouths max.

If it does not, do the above but choose option 4. If this does not work do the above again and choose option 5. Option 5 will format your hard drive.

I hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa

Turn on computer, hear beep beep beep. then monitor does not come on, says no signal. looking at black screen only

3 beeps is usually a memory error. In fact, it means there is a failure within the first 64KB of system memory. You can usually find out if one of your ram sticks is bad by taking a stick out and turning the PC back on. If it boots, you found the bad ram. If not, replace and try again.
Once you can ever get it to boot, you can go to memtest (http://www.memtest.org/) and download the auto installer for USB key and boot from USB (usually by pressing f12 or del, depending on your bios...it will say on boot up). This will tell you if you have any further ram issues.
If this doesn't resolve your issue, the other option 3 beeps can mean is a bad motherboard or other system device (worse case scenario, and fairly rare).
Hope this helps...

HI I HAD THAT PROBLEM SO I ASKED THE EXPERT..HE SOLVED MY PROBLEM! BASICALLY THERE A CORRUPTED DATA ON YOUR COMPUTER WHICH NEEDS FIXING.
QUICK STEPS: PLEASE NOTE YOU MAY LOSE YOUR SAVED DATA SO BEST TO BACK UP SYSTEM TO A USB FIRST.
ONCE YOU BACKED UP YOUR SYSTEM FOLLOW THIS STEPS ONLY IF YOUR SURE. THIS WORKED FOR ME, IT WORKS 90% OF THE TIME SO I WAS TOLD BY THE EXPERT. REALLY DEPENDS ON HOW MUCH DATA HAS BEEN CORRUPTED.
QUICK STEP:
  • TURN PS3 TO STANDBY BY PRESSING THE BUTTON THATS ON THE CONSOLE..HOLD THE BUTTON,YOU WILL HEAR FIRST BEEP THEN ANOTHER BEEP 5SECONDS LATER, THEN THE THIRD BEEP. HOLD BUTTON DOWN UNTIL THE LIGHT TURNS RED THEN MOVE FINGER.
  • NOW SWITCH ON PS3 HOLDING POWER BUTTON ON THE CONSOLE..HOLD THE BUTTON DOWN YOU WILL HEAR FIRST BEEP THEN ANOTHER BEEP 5 SECS LATER, THEN TWO BEEPS TOGETHER.LET GO OF BUTTON WHEN YOU HEAR TWO BEEPS.
  • IT SHOULD SAY SOMETHING ABOUT CORRUPT DATA. AGREE TO IT. SOON YOU SHOULD HAVE A 6 OPTION MENU COME UP.
  • PRESS NUMBER 3...RESTORE SYSTEM FILES
  • IT SHOULD THEN RESTART COMPUTER.
  • NOW TRY PLAYING YOUR GAME ONLINE.
  • ITS MEANT TO WORK AS IT DID FOR ME.
IF IT DOESNT WORK THAT MEANS THERES ANOTHER PROBLEM. I WOULD ADVICE YOU TO ASK THE EXPERT. THEY TELL YOU STEP BY STEP, THEY FIXED MINE IN HALF HOUR. ITS WORTH EVERY PENNY.IF THEY SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM THAT IS! HOPE THIS HELPED YOU GUYS...GOODLUCK!

The pc wont boot up and just gives a constant beep and does not stop. What does a constant beep mean?

First you should check which BIOS are you using. This will help in narrowing the diagnosis.

Diagnosis: This is usually caused by a problem with the system memory, or possibly the video card. The memory is more likely--the system complains long and loud if it can't find any usable memory, as there is no way to even start the boot process when this is the case. The motherboard itself could also be the problem.

Recommendation:
Troubleshoot the system memory.
Troubleshoot the video card.
Troubleshoot the motherboard.

Screen won't appear upon start up and I get 3 beeps but no screen

3 beeps POST code (power on self test) means RAM problem.
Reseat the RAM module/s and boot up your computer.
If you have two RAM modules, remove them both and insert one at a time to test them, to determine which module is faulty.
If it still doesn't work then replace the RAM module/s
