Random black lines on scanned slides

Hi all, got a bit of a wierd one. I'm currently over half way through a run of 6,000 slides, and the slidescan has started to place black bands on the slides in random positions and random thickness. It appears to not be scanner random areas of the slides. I've installed it on several machines with the same results so I know it must be the scanner.

Just wondering if anyone has had this problem before and of course if there was any work around for this.

Thanks in advance !

Dan

Thanks for your help. I have already tryed your suggestions prior to posting but with no effect. As you can see from below, its getting even worse now, I can't even do a single slide now.

Spoke to my supplier today and he has got in contact with Braun in Germany who will hopefully be ringing me today so I will keep my fingers crossed.

    Thanks for your help !!

The problem is likely to be a failure of the ribbon cable between the scanning head PCB and the mother board. This is a 28 pin cable, the cable run is poor, the type of cable is IMHO not the best for this application and is too short. The continuous flexing of this cable as the the scanner scans results in fractures of the copper. Replacement of the cable is required.

Any idea where we can get the cable?

Normally dark lines are a speck of dirt sticking on to the glass and when scanned continuously, it appears as a line. Clean the glass thoroughly. Ensure the slides are dust free. If the lines are appearing in different locations, it means the dust gets removed while scanning. Line in the same place could be because of glass is scratched. The above is common with roller scanners.

For fat bed scanners, there will be no scratch on the glass. It must be from the slides/documents

From the picture you had displayed, it appears that the scanner is faulty. It could that it is not capturing the data. You can check if the lighting is okay by keeping the top cover open. If the lighting is not okay, then you can try changing the light source. Some scanners use cold white light and some use RGB LEDs (Red Green Blue Light emitting diodes).

If the light is okay then the problem could be in data capture.I have no solution for this as it appears to be totally a hardware problem.

My Epson 4180 does not recognize the correct size of slides and B&W negatives even though I am using the carriers that came with the scanner. For example, the first scanned image on the negative strip...

I had this problem and what I figured out is that there is random stray light getting through between the holder and the slide itself. So, I created another template and taped it to the holder. The goal is to eliminate the stray light. This is how I did it basically. Get a black sheet of construction paper. Line it up with the Epson slide template and cut out holes for each slide so just the image/film plus a tiny edge around is exposed.

My Braun 3650 is scanning everything RED, I changed computers and is still scanning red, any idea why it's doing that?

See previous fix for black lines problem is likely the same i.e fractures in the flexible cable between the scanning head and mother board, changing this cable will likely cure this fault.

Scanning slides produces black images. Slide

Make sure the white document matt from uner the lid has been removed. Also in Epson scan make sure you have changed the document type from reflective to Film and Colour positive.

I solved my problem.
It's pretty personal, but I hope it can help others.
First: I might have created the problem myself because I slightly adapted the slide-mount.
Why?: Some time ago I had some unwilling films the automatic! film-mount wouldn't swallow, so I had to use the manually operated slide mount.
I adapted a slide housing a bit, so it could take and transport film.
To be short: In the end, there was transparent, (but also reflective) material inside the Coolscan V housing, close to the slide.
I removed it.

Second, I turned the scanner 45 degrees, and gave it a calculated whack on the side. (like you did with your tele in the 6ties, but a bit more carefull )

Don't know which one did the trick, or both. I can send a sample.
