I just bought two brand new printer cartridges about two months ago for my HP C4180, but rarely used the printer. When I installed them at first, they worked perfectly fine. Now when I go to print, the color (even though the cartridge is not that old) comes out grainy and not all colors are showing up. I did a self-test and it appears it will not print the colors cyan, yellow or green -but can print shades of red just fine.

Print cartridge is a knock off. Cartridges have printed circuits in them that the printer can recognize as being the original replacement. This is to keep people from using other products in their printer, which I think is foul, since you paid for the printer and it technically belongs to you. Sometime HP will make cartridges with faulty circuits that the printer will not recognize.. If that is the case call them and demand a new ink cartridge.
Yes - if they are not used they will dry up and be unusable. Unfortunate but you need to replace them. For future ref - IF they will not be used in 4 - 6 months pop them out and put scotch tape on the head where ink comes out and that should keep them good for several months.. I have done that and close to a year later - was fine. Hope this helps :)
The best cartridge for your printer, quite naturally, will be compatible
with the printer model. The best inks are those of HP ink cartridges
-this lowers the chance of smearing and clogging. Most printer
manufacturers, however, have begun to make cartridges that are
compatible with most HP inkjet printers, so the quality
of printing is always top notch. When selecting a new cartridge, user
must always be aware of what type of printer he is using. Remember, the
best cartridge should always be compatible with the printer.
Try using a new HP ink cartridge. I had the same problem with a printer I purchased off of CraigsList even though the ink level was good. I installed a new color HP ink cartridge and it printed without a problem.
Are you using a factory new ink cartridge?
Please consider the following:
If you are using a refilled or third party cartridge that may well be your problem. Most manufacturers build logic into their products to prevent the use of “Other Equipment Manufactured” cartridges as well as re-filled cartridges.
They do this to prevent problems from contaminated inks causing problems with print quality or damaging the physical printhead.
If you are using factory new cartridges, then please call the manufacturers Technical Support for assistance with the warranty on the cartridges
It is observed in branded printer not only lexmark also with HP printers yoou get this same problem.
It is always recomended to use genuine cartridges rather than refilled or any other brand ink cartridges.
As for HP cartridges they are all made under six sigma process where it is very rare you get a ink cartridge issue.
thats why HP Gives 18 months of replacement warranty on its cartridges
The same applies to Lexmark printers aswell
Make a habit of usig Genuine cartridges which will give value for your money.
