Did you turn the machine off and unpluged it for awhile...locking up may be a safety feature to protect machine from further damage
Make sure to remove broken needle if possible and turn lever by hand after restarting machine

I have this machine. If an error message occurs press ok or the back arrow key to clear message. Motor usually locks when thread is tangled. Make sure all thread is removed. hope this helps =)

Manual backtack lever works but electronic servo backtack only engages when machine is at rest with needle in up position.

hello there
at normal case needle bar must be in upper position because DDL-8700/7 does not equipped with needle feed. for your problem please check back tack solenoid open and close when you make back tack ( sometimes it was jammed and need to move by hand ).

Machine Locked

Hi, First of all, make certain you remove both parts of the needle. Sometimes it breaks under the plate and knots up with the bobbin. If that is so, lift the presser foot and carefully try to lift the plate so you can get scissors under it to cut the thread and free the needle. Pull the bobbin out and replace it and put a new needle in. It should work fine.

Thread becomes jammed in reverse

Reverse can be tricky if the machine is not timed correctly. So try this. after you've stitched forward for a while, use the hand wheel to bring the needle all the way down into the fabric and let it come part way up. Then push your back button and take your back stitches. If that works for you then you know the machine should be checked for proper timing.

it's very possible that whent the needle broke it put the machine out of time & a sewing machine repair shop has to retime the machine

Brother sewing machine model 732 (pretty old machine) compal star My machine was sewing forward up to today. I broke a needle changed that since when it wants to go backwards...any ideas what to do I have...

have you checked the reverse lever to see what position it's in?

if the needle broke at the tip end check in the bobbin area for needle fragments

it is possible that a broken needle can jam up or even get the machine out of time.
it may need to be serviced

This is the first time I am using this machine... it worked for a little while (15 minutes)and then the needle jammed. The whole part that moves the needle up and down doesn't move, manually or by pedal. I...

Unscrew the needle and you should be able to move the balance wheel, take the needle out and then look for thread jammed in the bobbin case area.

Machine will not sew, the needle just moves up and down

There is a lever in the back or bottom of the machine. See the pictugraph on your machines parts, this will locate that for you.
If there is a ton of thread jammed in the bobbin casing, you will have this problem as well.

Balance wheel is totally jammed

machine was working fine when suddenly it just jammed up. Everything seems to be fine, but the balance wheel is completely jammed rigid. I've looked at the shuttle and there are no thread jams at all. The needle moves fine from side to side with different stitch selections, but wont go up and down with the wheel.
I have tried looking in the machine, but I can't find any thread jammed.

Thread jamming, wont feed material, sewing in one place

Try moving the stitch length dial to 4 or 5 - check the manual. You may have it in the position for very close together sewing. I had to do a lot of trying with my 4795 to get it to work right. I found that very thin thread, polyester kind, broke at the needle after a couple of stitches. I switched to coats & clarks thread and a Singer ball point needle and it works fine. Be sure your needle is inserted with the flat top toward the back of the machine. Good luck!
