Hi this should be easy to do get the printer and plug the lead into the slot on back of printer then plug the other end into your computer their should only be one place it will fit in back of computer plug the lead in their might be picture of printer on back of computer it will be small and near a printer port.
The port in back of your computer is about 2 inches long or about 5 or 6 cm then plug the lead coming from printer into the port.
Now plug printer in and swtch on then switch computer on.
Now once your computer has started up you might get message new hardware found or start hardware wizard if you have disk that came with printer put this in your comp and follow instructions if you dont have disk let me know then i will talk you through the process let me know if your having problems ill be glad to help ok speak soon good luck but you should have no problems as its all plug and play and should set itself up.
If your printer is using usb port and not printer port then it will need plugging into any usb port on either the front of computer or back if you are unsure then let me know ok ill gladly help you ok

Hi do you have usb ports on the front or back of your comp you usually have two but might be on front near cd drive ill have a look at your model and tell you anyway it should only fit into one of these due to the size plug it in with printer on then in bottom right hand corner you should have a usb screen pop up this will allow you to install the software from the net if you have no disk.
Failing this if your usb port is not recognised then you need to plug printer into usb port then goto controll panel then goto on left hand side select classic view, now select add ahrdware devices this will then scan your comp for any hardware attatched to your comp.
When the scan is finished scroll down the list untill you see either usb port or the make of printer then click this then install it will ask if you have disk dont check this box if you dont have disk then let the computer search the net for correct software it should locate it for you then install this and your printert should now work.
Usb port could be on back but ill check and come back to you ok.
If your computer dont find correct software then use search engine and type in software for then give make and model.
let me know if you have any problems ok

If the printer works of usb port then plug the printer into usb port on your computer it should then pick the printer up as usb devices are all plug and play and require little setting up but find any usb port on your computer you should have at least two put in in either one on front or back then you should see it in bottom right hand corner of screen let me know once you get this far. Also if a usb port dont work then try another if niether work then leave printer plugged into usb port then use add hardware wizard to install the usb drivers ok if you get stuck let me know ill be back online in couple of hours but hopefully you should be able to follow what i tell you let me know ok speak soon

I want to install printer drivers to a laptop but the printer is in the field, how can I install the drivers without having the printer connected tot he laptop.

You don't necessarily need your printer connected to your PC to install the driver. The driver installation is so that your PC can communicate with the specified printer. If you have the install CD you can install the driver and software. Now Depending on your printing machine, some installation CD's will ask you to please connect your Printer. If this is the case, there really is no way around that because the installation directions wont let you proceed to the next step without doing that.
Each printer and its installation software have different protocols. Some will let you install without the printer being connected, some wont.
I hope this information gives you some clarification on your question.
Regards,
Nico

My printer will not install with the software.. it cant detact the printer for the final step

Assuming your are installing this on a windows system and I'm not sure about your level of expertise (sorry I don't know MAC's);
  1. It's a good idea to install the software on your PC before you connect the Printer to the PC (unless the directions say otherwise). Usually, either during the install or when you are done installing the software; the application will tell you to "connect the printer".
  2. IF you connected the Printer before loading your software then go to "control panel" printers and look for your new printer and uninstall it. Then REBOOT your computer. If you don't see your printer in control panel then you may need to go to "Devices" under "My Computer" and look for the printer there then delete it from there.
  3. Now install the software drivers (that came with your printer) on your computer.
  4. When the installation completes, search for new drivers if it prompts you to do so (assuming you are connected to the internet. Sometimes it's a good idea to get the most current drivers from the internet and load these rather than using the software from the box. Be sure to select the correct software/drivers for your operating system. You can run the install right from the internet.
  5. When you are connecting the printer to your PC (assuming you are using a USB cable); Plug the PC directly into a USB port on your PC and do not use a USB hub.

Cant connect lexmark X3550 to laptop wirelessly..

If you are trying to connect to a network printer you need to install a network printer NOT a PC install. You would have to browse for the "Remote" printer, from the CLIENT. The printer that is on the "Master" PC will have to have the printer already installed and "shared" as well, FIRST. Then you go to the remote and install a NETWORKED printer....find it on the network, and connect, it will actually get the drivers from the "Master" PC, see. Plus BOTH PC's will have to have a name password & and be on the same "Workgroup" as well. If you want to enable documents to be exchanged to print between PC's you will have to enable "Sharing" on each, Drive, or Folders as well, if you wish.
