What happens when the float switch is bad?

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration, appliance technician.

I think you have put your question in the wrong section this section is fro freezers. Freezers do not have a float switch.

So, lets assume you have a dishwasher. There are several reasons you keep filling with water:

1.) You may have a float that is restricted with soap film. This is a white bulb on the bottom of your unit. Remove the top and clean.

2.) At the top of your float is a contact switch. This switch activates you water discharge pump. This component is about $12.00 USD.

You can check this with a Ohm meter set to the lowest Ohms. Hold the switch button in and you should get a reading of '0' Ohms.

The above is just for your information. It is not your problem.

1.) Bad Water Supply Valve - Often the water supply valve becomes worn and blocked from age. When this happens you do not get the 65 PSI water pressure to close the water supply solenoid valve. Within your control system your float signals the valve to close. In your case it does not close.

Ok, lets check out your water supply shut off valve. With a bucket under the water supply valve, turn the valve off and disconnect the hose. If water comes out, then the supply vale is plugged and does not provide enough pressure to close the water supply solenoid valve on your unit. You have a bad water supply valve.

Ok, the water shuts off. Lets look at your unit water supply solenoid valve. The spool in the valve often becomes stuck with age.

With a hair drier gently warm the valve (NOT HOT) and gently tap the valve to try and loosen the spool.

This sometimes works. In the end you are going to have to replace the valve.

This is a pretty easy repair. The valve is about $35.00 USD. If I were to make a service call at your home, I would have to charge you $350.00 USD.

Send me your model number. It is located either on the face of your dish washer after you open the door or on top of the door.
Call me and I will walk you through this @ 443-306-1362.

I will be expecting a Christmas Card in return.

Does not fill with water.

follow this steps and fix it. God bless you

Water Inlet Valve

The dishwasher has an electrical water valve called a water inlet valve. If the dishwasher won't fill with water, the water inlet valve might be defective. These valves are not repairable and will have to be replaced.

Enter your model number to see parts for your dishwasher.

The float assembly is normally inside the dishwasher near the door on the floor of the dishwasher. If something gets stuck underneath it and holds the float assembly up, the dishwasher won't fill with water. If the float assembly moves freely up and down, the float switch might be defective.

Enter your model number to see parts for your dishwasher.

Float Switch

The float switch is actuated by the float assembly. It is a protection device designed to prevent the dishwasher from overfilling. If the dishwasher won't fill with water, it may be because this float switch is defective or stuck.

Water Supply Problem

The dishwasher is connected to the hot water supply from the house. Check to be sure the household water supply valve is turned on. Over time, calcium deposits can build up in the water supply valve or in the small filter screen inside the water inlet valve. The water supply line may need to be removed from the water inlet valve of the dishwasher, then run some water into a bucket to see if there is enough pressure. Be certain to turn off the water before working on the water line.

Frigidaire washer (model number GLTF2940E) starts when you push the Start button. Water starts to fill in but then stops after 15 seconds. Please adivce.

If it starts to agitate after water stops filling check the pressure switch and hose. If it doesn't agitate check the supply hoses behind the machine make sure they are not kinked. If they look ok turn off supply valves and remove hoses from washer. They are connected to the watervalve. The valve has screens to catch lyme deposits and other debris. Use a toothbrush or spray bottle to flush debris clear. Reattach hoses carefully. Hand tight only and then a 1/4 turn more with pliers. Do not overtighten. Do not use teflon tape. Do not crossthread the connection. Turn supply valves back on to test. If problem persists watervalves may need replaced.

Water supply isnt getting to the ice maker .

HI welcome to fix-ya. Sounds like bad watervalve with a frozen filltube. Try using a hairdryer to thaw the tube that the water enters icemaker. Then replace watervalve. I take it you can get water out of the door and the filter is ok. This can also cause the problem. I hope this helps.

Hi there. My Maytag MSE 760 FARS dishwasher is not filling, but the heating element is working. I suspect the pump has failed. What do I do?

what you can check,

  1. the float in the tub.their may be something caught under it
  2. the water valve, use a meter set to check ac voltage and check for 120 volts ac at the plug to it,if has 120 when supposed to fill valve is bad so long at it has water supply to it
  3. the float switch, use meter set to lowest ohms setting and remove the 2 wires on float switch and check for continunity(zero ohms) if meter reads OL replace float switch
  4. the control, check for 120 volts ac to float switch when supposed to fill, if 120 at fill portion yet no fill ,replace control
  5. water supply,if uses flex tube something in cabinet under sink may have pinched water line
Good luck,i hope this helps

When i turn it on water does not come in. Ive check water supply it is ok, i just installed a new water control valve. Did not fix the problem

Make sure you a the water valve turned on. Next check item#25 & 28# on here
Sometimes soap build up can cause the float to get stuck and send a signal that the tub is full. Make sure the float and bobble freely you will notice a click sound that is the micro switch that turns off the water supply.
Good Luck. Please rate your experience today. Thanks

Dishwasher will not fill, water supply checked OK, inlet filter checked OK

Check the float switch. Sometimes you can jiggle it around to get it working. Also check the leads going to the water inlet to see if you have power unit must be started to check this. If you have power to the valve it has failed if not check that float switch for continuity. One of the leads from the water inlet goes to the float switch.

Water dispenser problem

Get a step ladder and push panel up at top to expose the compressor and wiring. Between the left and right there is nothing other than wire harness leading into the fridge. In this empty area toward the middle left is the watervalve easy to see. Unhook connections to watervalve and test for voltage to do this get a voltmeter put on AC setting put probes in each side of connection. Have some one push the despencer switch in and see if you get 120V if you do the watervalve is bad and needs replaced. If you don't get 120V than you have a short in the wire harness or the despencer control board has failed. Hope I helped.
