The only solution that I can think of would be a power jack problem. I would not advise replacing the power jack yourself since you have to take out the laptop mother board, de-solder the power jack then solder the new one on and put it back together. My advice would be to take it to a professional computer repair shop and have them take a look at it and replace the power jack. It is worth getting repaired since power jacks usually range $40-$70.

Is the battery charging when you plug the power supply? If not, while the battery and the power supply is plugged in go to BIOS, that will be F2 when your computer boots up, from there check on battery health or battery info you will also see the ac adapter if it's detected if it says unknown try to use another ac adapter if it is detected still try to use another adapter. If you still have the same problem after trying a new one. You'll need to replace the motherboard
I suggest you DONT USE PINCH POWER CORD FOR SAFETY.
PLEASE TELL ME IS YOUR POWER CORD & THE PINCHED CORD ARE SAME? I MEAN SAME MODEL? AFTER PLUGING OF YOUR CORD, THE BATTERY CHARGING LIGHTS ITS ON? IF NO THEN I GUESS THAT CABLE NOT SUPPORT HER LAPTOP.
VISIT A DELL SERVICE CENTER OR A SHOWROOM AND BUY NEW CORD WHICH IS MADE FOR YOUR DAUGHTER LAPTOP MODEL.
OTHER WISE SOME CHANCES OF SHORTCIRCUIT ON MOTHERBOARD.
Thanks, i am waiting for your feed back & if you satisfied then thumps me please.
Hello, The CMOS battery supplies energy to the Real Time Clock when the computer is not connected to the electrical socket, and does not have the battery inserted. It should not prevent the computer from starting up. You will however be asked to reset the time and date of the computer. Hope it helps.
check your power supply and make sure the proper power at the ends and the light is on the power supply, I no those C640 s have a problem with the darn plug in and the pins in the laptop may have got bend or broken check that out and if all the pins are not bent. your power supply may be bad check that out, if so you can go to Dellsupport.com and order one for fairly cheap. I think that will fix your problem.
get to the main board of ur system there is a jumper near the battery . change its position while power is off and get it back to its previous position. this way u will reset cmos to default. if the computer starts hit delete to enter setup and load system defaults.save changes then exit.
ps: defected processor could be the cause
I have the exact same issue. It's not the processor. If you have you power supply tested, you will probably find that it's not working anymore. The green light still comes on when plugged in, but it's not sending the "charge" to the notebook.
I have this issue with a couple of C640's. I've tested the machine by charging the battery in another (Pentium 3 Dell C600), then putting it back into the broken machine... woohoo it works.
Unfortunately I can't figure out why the power supply's keep on busting, I don't think that the power-supplies are faulty, or maybe they just get old, don't know, but the most obvious problem is probably something with the mainboard, which really sux.
