Question about Dishwashers
Sounds like the glasses have been "crazed" by the detergent used. The detergent is so harsh that it removes the smooth finish on the glass. Unfortunately, there is no way to fix this. The new detergents on the market now days is better and does not do this.
Also, some older machines did not have a "rinse" dispenser so there won't be a separate "trapdoor." You can try some of the new detergents that have the rinse in the detergent, ie Finish.
As you said, it's a very old machine.

SOURCE: Water in salt reservoir
I've had the same dishwasher for 2 years now and always had water in the salt compartment. Don't know if this is normal but disn't seem to be a problem til now. Just fill with salt as if it was empty.

Hi this is not salt or detergent. This is likely to be lime/calcium. Go to home depot or a similar hardware store and buy a gallon of lime-away or similar product. Start the dishwasher on pots and pans then once the dishwasher has filled with water open the door and pour around 2 cups of lime-away in. Let the entire cycle run and then repeat this once a week until the problem clears up. Once the problem clears up repeat this once every 3 months to prevent the problem returning. If you have any other questions please feel free to comment. Mike

Testimonial: "Thank you so much! I'm quite impressed."
we found that part inside ours. it twist snaps on to the water out let at the back of the unit where the top sprayer arm normally connects. although we cannot find a reference in the manual, it looks like it is for cases where you want to remove the top rack to wash a tall item.

I just took mine apart (bottom turntable, screen, etc.) and I was disgusted by the grime and gum that was clogging everything. I think it was keeping all the water a gritty white, which constantly left residue. I am currently running a load... hope that the "clean" dishwasher actually washes my dishes now!
