Question about HP Compaq Evo Notebook N410c

2 Answers

My Compaq Evo n610c stopped working....it went into screen saver mode then shut off two minutes later. It will not power on. There are no lights, nothing. I tried with and w/o battery in, adaptor checks out fine. What are the main components that would cause this issue and how can I replace them if needed?

I believe laptop is dirty inside........

The cooling system for the laptop is air cooling.
If 'Gunk' is coating the cooling system, the cooling capacity of the cooling system drops tremendously.

['Gunk' = Dirt, dust, hair, carpet deodorizer, lint, food crumbs.....you name it ]

The two hardware components that give off the most heat, is the Processor and graphics chipset. (CPU and GPU)

When a Processor (CPU) overheats it turns off. (BIOS turns it off)
This is a fail safe feature that is built-in. Keeps the CPU (Processor) from burning up.

Once this has happened an Error Code is stored, and will not be released until the inside of the laptop has been cleaned.
Should also replace the Thermal Paste on the Processor (CPU), and Thermal Pad on the graphics chipset. (GPU)

Let's start here...........

Before you dig into that laptop, you need to be wearing an ESD wrist strap, and have it's alligator clip attached to a good ground source.
Average cost is $3 to $5.
Here is but one example,

I connect to an unpainted surface, of the metal frame of an open, empty desktop computer case. I feel an Anti-Static Mat is unwarranted, and can expound on that.

You can set a large metal serving tray (Unpainted), on the table you're working on, and connect to it.
Or a large metal knickknack. (Unpainted)

Disconnect the power cable from the Notebook and then remove the Battery pack. While the Battery pack is removed, press and hold the power button on the Notebook for 15 seconds.

Next, reinsert the Battery pack and connect the power cord to the Notebook and turn it ON. While the Computer is booting, you can view the information on the bottom of the screen to get to the Setup Screen.

On the Setup screen, use the right arrow key to highlight the "Exit" menu, then select the option "load/get default" and press the Enter key followed by F10 keypress to reset the BIOS and save and exit the screen.

Usually it's the inverter. Sometimes it's the backlight / lcd, and occasionally it's the lcd cable and or video card.

Easiest thing to do is order a replacement inverter from ebay. They're cheap and then swap it. You just need to remove the outside lcd bezel, it's just four or five screws and you're in business.

Powered off.

Any beeps when you turn it on? unplug everything and then plug it back in. Make sure the monitor connections are good and that you have it turned on. Again make sure it's turned on. Sometimes it's the simple stuff. Was the monitor working well before it failed? Do you have a video card?
Remove the battery, AC, count to ten and try one last time?
