Question about Acer AL1916B 19" LCD Monitor

1 Answer

Well my ACER AL1916B LCD monitor blew up.

Well my ACER AL1916B LCD monitor stopped working with a 'bang' the other day. Opened her up to see some bulging caps and also the transistor that blew up on the power board causing the loud bang I heard. Quite a sight.

I'm going to try to fix this DIY style, but because the transistor has been blasted apart I can't see the model number I need to order. Can anyone help?

The transistor is at U101 up against the straight heat sink. The power board is FSP043-2PI01.

Thanks if you can help out.

    Thanks for the response, budmrtn.

I'm considering a new board entirely, like you suggest, but would still like to know what the MOSFET model is, in case that is all that needs replacing (along with some capacitors).

Ok, I think I have identified the blown transistor as the FSDM0565R.

Thanks for your patience and help budmrtn.

As I understand it, the MOSFET and switch mode driver IC were both in the one unit that exploded. Replacing this part should replace both. Am I missing something?

I don't follow your other suggestion to check the resistors and diode between the MOSFET gate and IC output pin. The IC has exploded.

    UPDATE:
I got the monitor working again by replacing the IC transistor (FSDM0565R), and two zener diodes which were fried. Monitor still going strong, although I'm not using it everyday.

The MOSFET that blew up will more likely to have the switch mode driver IC that went out with it also, you need to verify that the IC is good otherwise you will blow up the new MOSFET, you may be better off buying a new board from here: http://www.discount-merchant.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=1160140&Click=54985
By the time you order the new MOSFET and other parts it may end up more han $35, just a suggestion.

You need to check the resistors and diode connected between the Gate of the MOSFET and the driving IC Gate driving out put pin, more likely the output IC pin resistance will be really low when it is bad, it should be in 10K Ohms or more range for good IC.

OK, your power supply board does use all in one integrated MOSFET/SWITCH MODE IC, http://www.datasheetcatalog.org/datashee...

So it may be worth trying a new IC.

I have an ACER LCD monitor model AL1916. I just stopped working one day, no pop or burning smell. I don't have any lights on my power switch or on the screen, just dead!

If you are going to DIY and have proper tools and know safety precaution then please read on:
Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply (they should be replaced in a set), blown fuses; poor solder joints, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed ACER monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

It is probably the inverter which powers the backlight. It should say inverter right on it.

I can't open the case on a ACER AL1916B monitor,it does not match the Acer service manuals.Other than the base bracket mounting screws, mine has only 2 screws at the bottom of the case. I would like to open...

refortsm, you didn't say that you looked at any video clips on YOUTUBE that deal with LCD monitor disassembly. Find very , very DULL butter knife or table knife. You do not need a trip to the "ER" for a self-inflicted stab-wound!!! Some use old cd rom disc's for release of perimeter locking tabs???? Protect the units glass LCD panel at all times. You crack-it, then it's "You bought it you own it toyota!" "game over" for you. Removal of rear cover is hardest part of unit "tear-down" and inspection. Key for you is START at bottom with B-knife and pry gently. I hope this helps. Let me know about your "switch-mode-power-supply" condition. lmistyrel on aim. or 12fixlouie on Fixya

MONITOR PROBLEM

This may not be a Monitor problem. So if you can try to get to test monitor on another computer. Check carefully the data cable to ensure there are no bent pins. If it turnout to be a monitor problem then at only 6 months -Acer should replace it. If the monitor works - you should have the graphics card on the computer checked out. If you feel you can do this - and you can- basic checks come back as another request.
