Firstly, it's actually an f4-5.6 lens, meaning that the maximum aperture at the 70mm setting is f4, and this gradually decreases to f5.6 at the 300mm setting. It's confusing as the lens barrel will say "f1:4-5.6" which is shorthand for "f1:4 to f1:5.6"

As to whether it will fit, that all depends upon the mounting which the lens was manufactured with. Sigma manufacture variants to fit Sigma, Canon, Nikon(D), Sony and Pentax. So if the lens has a Sony mount then it should fit your camera as they inherited the mounting when they bought Konica-Minolta a few years ago and still use it today.

BUT...the huge fly in the ointment is that your Minolta Maxxum 3 is a 35mm film camera and the lens you're asking about is designed for digital cameras using the physically smaller APS-C size sensor. If you use it on your camera then the image produced by the lens will not fill a 35mm film frame; you'll have severe vignetting (dark photo corners) and the camera's metering system will also try to compensate for the dark areas and may overexpose the shot overall.

So the answer to your question is that the lens is completely unsuitable for your camera.

I hope that you have found my advice to be of use and ask in return only that you return the favour by rating my answer.

LEGAL NOTE: if you have genuinely acquired the lens by finding it somewhere, then in most countries you are legally required to hand it to the police to declare it as lost property. Not doing so in the UK constitutes "theft by finder" and all countries which have lost property laws will also have a similar offence. I do not suggest that you have done anything dishonest, but I must add this point to make clear that FixYa does not condone or provide assistance with any acts with which it has reasonable grounds to suspect are illegal.

Is it possible to convert a sigma lens to fit a canon body or by using an m42 adapter?

Sigma makes their lenses with a variety of mounts. If the lens has a Canon or M42 mount then there is no problem. If it has a Minolta mount, for example, then replacing the lens will be easier and just as cheap as changing the mount. If it has Nikon mount, you can buy adapters to fit it to Canon or M42 bodies.

Will a SIGMA 70-300 f4 DL MACRO LENS fit on a CANON EOS 20D?

Assuming you get the lens with a Canon mount, yes. Sigma makes lenses to fit a variety of makes, but each one has a different mount. A lens intended for a Nikon, for example, will not fit a Canon.

Will a Sigma DL Macro Super 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 Lens fit my Nikon D80?

All after market lenses are specifically designed for a brand of camera. They are for Nikon, Cannon, Minolta etc.. They can not be cross branded just as you could not use a Nikon made lens on a Pentax.

Will Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DL fit a canon D60

Sigma make this lens with different mountings (i.e. Canon, Nikon, Sony/Minolta, Pentax and Sigma). So, if you get this lens with the Canon mounting - yes it'll work with your D60. Any other mounting will not fit on your camera. Hope that helps

Yes, if you get one with a Canon mount. Sigma makes their lenses available with a variety of mounts; a lens with a Nikon mount, for example, will not fit on a Canon camera.

It sounds like a CPU chip incompatability issue. Sigma has that problem sometimes but are usually very good about rechipping at no cost (at least for Nikon-mount lenses). What did they say when you asked them?
