Question about Texas Instruments TI-84 Plus Calculator

1 Answer

My calculator is lagging. The usual flash [] stays black now. And I need to press buttons for 3 seconds or more before it appears on screen. Also, I cant use 2nd-ON to turn it off. As well as that, my arrow keys can only be pressed once, therefore, only moving once even if I hold on for 10 seconds or more. Help Please! How can I reset everything back to normal?

Look at the I/O port (the round one on the top left side) and extract any foreign material that may be lodged inside the port. You can use compressed air but not the tip of pencil as the "lead" (in fact graphite) is an electrical conductor.

To reset the calculator the RAM must be cleared

To clear RAM

  1. Press [2nd][+] to access (MEM) memory management
  2. Press [7:Reset][1:All Ram][2:Reset][ENTER]
  3. Press [CLEAR] to erase "Ram Cleared" message.
After you reset the Ram you may have to adjust screen contrast
  1. Press [2nd] key and release it
  2. Press and hold
  • Up Arrow to darken screen, or
  • Down Arrow to lighten it.

The on button on my ti-83 is working but that is the only button working as far as I can tell because the screen stays blank

TI calculators have an annoying habit of dimming the screen when the batteries are changed so that it appears as if the calculator isn't turning on. Turn the calculator on (or at least press the ON key). Press and release the 2ND key. Press and hold the Up-arrow key for a few seconds and see whether the screen becomes legible. Does it?

I don't know how to unfreeze the calculator. When I turn it on, it goes to a graph screen that is completely black. When you press other buttons nothing appears. The blackened screen just stays there the...

Hello,

Press [CLEAR] to erase the screen.
Press [2nd][QUIT] to interrupt any program that may be hung in memory

Those steps were just in case. Even if these do not do anything keep hope. If you are lucky the screen may just be too dark.
Press [2nd] and release it.
Press and HOLD the Down Arrow, till screen lightens.

If that does not solve the problem you may have to force the calculator to boot up. Details are in the article . Read the part on Ti83Plus family.
The article contains links to additional articles.
Hope it helps.

This will erase all memory and reset defaults.

1. Remove 1 AAA Battery
2. Press and Hold 'ON' for 30 seconds
3. Replace AAA Battery

If this fails, try again with ALL Batteries removed including

1. Remove ALL Batteries (inc. Backup)
2. Let Calculator sit with no batteries for 2~4 hours.
3. Hold 'ON' for 30 seconds.
4. Replace all the batteries (May be good idea to use new batteries
just in case old ones were dead)
5. Turn on Calculator
6. Change Contrast to appropriate level

- Remember to use correct batteries or calculator may not work. The
correct batteries are Alkaline, Rechargable Batteries are TOO WEAK,
Heavy Duty batteries are TOO STRONG.
