Question about IBM ThinkPad T61 Notebook

Usb ports don't work

None of the usb ports work on my laptop, please advise how to resolve this issue. Is it possible I accidentially turn off some functionality that prevent it to function? I have a Lenovo Thinkpad T61.

Thank You!

I think the problem lies in a damaged USB controller on the laptop. The fact that none of the ports work, indicates that either the power to the ports has failed, or more likely the circuitry controlling the USB hub has failed. Sadly You will most likely need to replace the motherboard

Leave it plugged in and reboot the system...See if that works. Usb ports can be finicky sometimes, but they are reset when the system is booted up. Otherwise, check to make sure you have an adequate power supply to the laptop.

My toughbook does not recognise USB memory

Please follow the steps as mentioned below
  • 1 Shut down your computer the proper way if possible, via your "Start" menu. If your system is completely locked up, however, then press your PC's power button and hold for 5 to 10 seconds, and your computer tower will turn off.
  • 2 Unplug your computer - this is a very, very important step! Unplug your PC from its power supply. This will typically be the uppermost black cord at the back of your tower. For a notebook or laptop, remove the computer's battery and then un-pug its cord from the laptop. It is not enough to switch off your surge protector - you must unplug the cord from your laptop.

  • Wait for at least 30 seconds after all you computer and Internet equipment is unplugged. This will allow enough time for any residual power to drain out of your different devices. You can speed up the process as you wait, by pressing the power button on your unplugged computer, which will help to drain all the power that is left over in your PC's motherboard.
  • 4 Now reconnect all the Device and check the issue should be resolved. Please try connecting the USB device directly to the Computer's USB port.

  • Hope this should resolve the issue.. Please get back if the issue still persist.

    Thank you. Bye

    It wont show up

Have you tried alternate usb cables and usb ports on your system? have you tried a different system? If that doesn't resolve the issue- you have a dead external drive- if swapping the cables works, you have a dead cable. If swapping the port that you are connecting to- it could be the port is bad, or the port is a low power port. If swapping to a second system works- and none of the ports on the other system works- then the system will need service- either for reinstalling windows, or a replacement motherboard since the USB has failed.

I have a 2GB Kingston USB, and never detected when i insert to the USB port, my problem is, how can I reformat the USB? I hope you can help me to solve this problem. thanks and more power.

Have you tried the other USB ports? If none works, try also a different USB device to the computer. It may be that the USB drive you have is the one defective. If another device isnt detected as well, try updating your chipset driver, and also reset your BIOS to default. If none would work, possible motherboard replacement will resolve the issue.

My hp pavillion laptop is having a problem with a mobile mouse usage. i know it's the laptop because a perfectly functional wireless mouse does not work on this laptop. could it be something with the usb...

It may be just a matter of a driver ...for example you have a 1.0 port and it need a 2.0 usb port you will have to install the 2.0 usb driver ..if it is not installed...or maybe the laptop is not equipped with one ...but I doubt it ...Anyway ..first go to bios (press F2 on start ) and in there restore to optimal factory defaults ..and save changes with F10 ...
In this point you know for sure that your USB ports are enabled...Than run the driver for the mouse from the disk that came with it ...Usually it will be an Usb 2.0 driver too ..but if you have at least the windows XP on it ..this is already installed from the operation system ....
if all that are made..the only thing that remain to check and concentrate on is the pairing of the receiver and the mouse itself...just press that button ..and let them pair again ...

The USB Ports Don't Work On My Laptop

If you're using xp, see this article.
Also helpful are articles here and here.
You'll need to take a look at the usb controllers in device manager, and possibly uninstall them. They will be reinstalled when you reboot the system. See the articles for specifics...

does your usb mem stick have any light indicators? if yes , whenever you put you usb stick, does it light? if it lights are USB ports is still ok,  You just have to reformat or partition you USB stick.
(you can also try other devices like usb mouse or any usb devices that lights up when you connect it)

if there are no lights if you plug, or no indication that a power goes to your stick, its possible that your usb your are busted. if this is the case, if your laptop has a PCMIA slot, you can find a pcmia USB card, if you dont have. your only option is replace the  motherboard.
