If you look at the back of your computer, note where the video cable is connected. If the video cable is connected to the back plane where the expansion cards are installed, then it has a video card inserted either the PCI slot or the AGP slot.
If the video connector is next to the LPT, COM ports, USB ports etc. then the video controller is part of the motherboard.
If you want to replace the video card, the on-board video card can be disabled from the BIOS configuration and a better quality video card can be inserted into the AGP slot.

SOURCE: Want to upgrade the video card in computer

Yes you can upgrade the video card on your computer. The ones that the computer comes with are built in. There should be enough of a variety of Plug and Play video cards available that will work. You did not say what kind of computer you have but when you go to buy the video card you want to install be sure that the person selling it to you guarantees that it will work for your system. Circuit City, Best Buy and other computer software and hardware companies will do at least that so you do not get stuck with something that is not compatible. The installation disc that comes with the card should be straight forward enough and you should not have to answer too many prompts in the pop up window wizard. It should tell you in the end how much video memory you have total after installation and also on power up during the diagnostics and in the setup of the cmos bios. You should not run into any problems. Look for a reputable dealer and good luck.

I'm thinking it might be the video or graphics card on my desk top ive tried several different monitors and nothing no error message no windows logo all the ports and cables are fine nothings broken

if it has a separate monitor connection on the mother board at the back, pull the graphic card and connect to the monitor to that connection
If it is a graphic card , the mother board card will run the monitor so replace the graphic card
if you do not have a plug in graphic card and that is how you have it set up take it in for a proper diagnosis as it may be the mother board is failing

If the motherboard has integrated video, it can be disabled and another addin video card can be installed into an available pci-e, agp, or pci slot if your computer has one. This is not something you can do with a laptop, only a desktop computer. For example, when i put a video card in one of my extra slots it automatically disables the integrated video.
If your video card is ALREADY in one of the ADD_IN slots, it can be removed and replaced.

Booting problem

either the internal video on the motherboard has failed or the video card has failed. look at the back of the unit if the video port is twords the bottom then it is a removable card if it is at the top then it is integrated and you will have to dish out money for a replacement mother board

My computer suddenly stopped showing any picture on the moniter. I bought another moniter to replace the existing one yet after attaching it to the computer still no picture what could be the problem

best guess would be the video card died, its possible the slot on the mother board went bad, but extremely unlikely..
if your machine has a seperate video card try replacing it with a known good working one.
if however like a lot of newer cheaper computers the video card may be built into, and onto the mother board, you will need to disable that before you attempt to install another video card and load drivers for that card..
hope this helps,
best of luck,

I would take you computer to a computer store to have it hooked up. this will alow you to see if you video card is bad. You mother board could also be bad, so video card are mounted directly to the mother boards.

Most likely is not monitior but video card

I have a sony vaio pc with a p 450-vx mother board, the darn thing won't boot up the mother board light is on and the fans come on light on front is amber. Oh yeah I,ve changed out video cards.

if the screen comes on for a few seconds and then goes to sleep mode you probably have not installed the drivers for the new video card correctly. you should shut down computer, replace the new card with the old one, put in the disk with the drivers for the new card, install the new drivers and then shutdn and replace the old with the new and reboot. this should solve the problem. please rate me and thanks for choosing enterprise computing solutions..

AMD Motherboard with, on board video card has voltage short no video available on monitor. I would like to disable and add a AGP card.

When the Computer is off install the AGP card and put it together next start the computer when it starts up hit Del key before it boots up go into bios go to devices and disable onboard video, then hit F10 say yes to save changes and reboot it will then detect the card and will ask for drivers for the card. Be sure you read the directions for the video card You may have to install the drivers first, since you did not mention the card brand names and what mother board you have. Asus has many mother boards.

Signal to monitor goes in and out, mostly out

Hopefully, it is just the on board video that has gone bad, and not the motherboard. When you install a video card on a PC, that has on board or integrated video, you will need to access the BIOS screen on start up and disable the on board video. That way the video signal will come from the new video card and not the on board video.

I hope this helps,

Dell Monitor Not Working

well if the status of the LEd on the monitor is amber(orange) & the system is running on a on board video card & not a Add-on video card... it is a possibility the the integrated video card ot the mother board might have gone bad... either contact a local tech or the tech support for the computer...

also unplug the monitor cable from the system tower & then if you see that there are the bars moving which say monitor self test on... means tht the problem is with the video card or the mother board...
since the system is running on a integrated video card...
