Sounds like the pickup roller is shiny, that will cause the squeal and it won't pull the paper giving a jam (may not be jammed, but it gives a jam when paper doesnt pass a sensor in a certain time). Also the 2100, 2200 and 2300 machines are prone to a problem with sticking solenoid(s). There is a solenoid for tray 1 and one for tray 2. Requires tearing the machine down on the right side to get to the solenoids but easy to fix. It usually occurs when the printer gets to a certain age, the pad on the body of the solenoid that is there to quiet the clack of the solenoid gets gooey, the cheap adhesive and pad break down in the normal atmospheric ozones. This causes the solenoid to stay engaged longer (or permanently) than it should. Instead of the moving lever of the solenoid releasing when power is taken away from the coil it sticks then eventually releases when the goo lets go. Once you get to the solenoids, you take one out at a time, carefully remove the spring then the flap. Clean the top of the coil body with lighter fluid till bare metal then the same with the underside of the flap. If you want to supress noise put a pad of good quality (3M/Scotch is best) electrical tape in place of the original pad on the coil body. Then put the flap and spring back, put the solenoid back in place and do the other the same way and reassemble the machine.
Service manual you will need, and can get for free download at feedroller.com - look down the left nav bar near the bottom for manuals. Go to HP then look in the laserjet area. Alternately you can do an instant download for a few dollars at justmanuals.com
Be very careful of how you do the release locks that hold the pickup roller. Take the toner out of the machine, remove tray 2 and flip the unit upside down on it's top and it will be easier to work with. Be sure of the position of the paper level lever to the left (as you look down at the upside down printer) of the pickup roller when you put things back. Pickup roller can be gotten from a number of sources for under $5
