I am now having the same problem, after having my unit for almost a year without problems. When I load a DVD, the screen says "Loading" and then eventually says "no disc." This happened suddenly. I uploaded new firmware (v. 46), but this did not help.

  • Anonymous Mar 21, 2008

I have same problem ... My CD's and USB drive is working fine.

  • jskimerer Mar 25, 2008

I just started to have this problem after a year and half of no problems. Yesterday it it would say no disc after loading, now today it works? I wonder if after time something is wearing out?

  • kstrider Mar 25, 2008

yes mine does the same thing and the phillips people said it would take $162.00 to replace it and they would just send me the same dvd player.

  • Anonymous Apr 26, 2008

Mine stopped reading all discs also, which really stinks because this system is in my living room where the whole family watches movies. What to do?

  • tomim0 Apr 28, 2008

It is a peace of junk!!! I bought it a year ago and same problem "NO DISC". I am reporting it to BBB. They don't want to do any replacement unless you pay fee...

  • Anonymous May 04, 2008

This is our second machine and both times we have encountered No disc when putting DVD's in. It was suggest to me by the shop we purchased it, to use a disc cleaner .. slight problem, it can't read it!

  • Anonymous May 23, 2008

same problem, no disc, had one sent back and "fixed", it too now says no disc!!! just got off the phone and yes all they could do is say pay me 162.00 and we will ship another one aout to ya since the warranty is no good anymore and they dont warranty repairs they do! people we all got screwed! we need to do something!

  • activeuser Jun 06, 2008

We used this system for about two-three months without any problem. But suddenly one day it said NO DISC to a DVD and I thought must be a bad DVD. I tried other newer DVDs but everytime I saw NO DISC on screen. I tried Philips Lens Cleaner a few times. It started working a couple of times but now again it says NO DISC to every DVD, even the brandnew ones. I am frustrated by this because I can't see any of the movies and its too much hassle to tear down all the wire coverings that I installed myself to take out the system for repair or sending it back to Philips. Replacement will also start doing the same thing after a few weeks or so. So I strongly believe that Philips should recall this system to maintain their reputation in the market.

just got off the phone with them and guess what.... $150 and i can have me a nice refurbished one... i seriously used it like 7 times... PHILIPS SUCKS A$$

  • georgia 2 Jun 23, 2008

Same thing with ours. We bought it 01/27/2007 and it's never worked right. Philips needs to do something as the numbers are growing !!!!!

  • Anonymous Aug 16, 2008

Same problem here, Might get lucky and play one out of twenty movies but, that's probably just luck. Everything else seems to work OK and it sounds great. It's just a POS when it comes to being a dvd player.

  • steveo99 Aug 20, 2008

Just after I received the box, it started to intermittently recognize the dvds. Now ---- NO DVD's are working. This pisses me off since I got rid of my other DVD player

  • taruntandon Sep 14, 2008

I had originally bought this system in Dec. 2007, it worked fine for a few months (I had upgraded its firmware right away to ver. 46), but after a while the dreaded 'No Disc' started showing up once in a while for even brand-new DVDs.. Once in a while DVDs would get stuck inside and I would have to just patiently keep trying all kind of power turn on/off maneuvering to get it out, sometimes it took 10 minutes and at other times a couple of hours. And then one fine day it stopped accepting DVDs altogether, and I had no choice but send it back. Since I had bought extended warranty, they did send me back a 'RENEWED' system (manufactured in Jul 2007) that obviously has been returned by one of us. Their repair shop simply has been recycling the faulty systems under warranty obligations, probably after resetting/cleaning its internal tray hardware so it works for a few months once again. I'll report in as soon as it starts acting up again, which I am pretty sure it will.

The interesting thing is that when you report this issue and ask for a warranty replacement, they want the whole original system back, including the speakers etc., not just the faulty main unit. Shipping the whole thing costs around $50+. I am sure they are betting on the fact that even the customers with valid warranty would stop sending the system back with that kind of shipping. And the customers with no valid warranty are screwed anyway. Good Job Philips management, you must be so PROUD of your lowlife skills.

You could tray to update the Firmware to V47. See Philips site

I have a very similar story with my HTS-6500/37. Not reading discs, multiple attempts to eject discs before finally getting them out. I bought mine in January 07 and by November of 07 I sent it in for a replacement. I only play about one DVD a week on average. Horrible customer service by the way! They had me send back the DVD unit and the remote only. When I received the replacement (refurbished unit) in Dec 07 they sent me the entire system again plus an extra remote, so I have extra speakers, sub and remote. Not only is their customer service bad, they aren't very bright either. Everything was fine with the replacement....for about 7 months. It started intermintently reading discs, sometimes freezing on a black screen with "root" on the display and sometimes just receiving the "no disc" message. It got worse and worse. Just a few days ago I started to search message boards and found that Philips had a V47 firmware upgrade on their web site designed to solve disc playback issues. Finally a solution! I checked my refurbished unit which was on V46, so I followed their directions exactly, burnt the V47 upgrade to a CD-R and installed it. Double checked the unit, which now displayed V47! Great, my problems are over! It didn't read the very first disc I put in after the upgrade. In fact it only read that disc once out of 9 tries in a row. I guess I will wait for V48 upgrade. Maybe that will work better. Unless Philips issues a recall, which they won't, I will never purchase a Philips product again.

Had the system for about 9 months and suddendlu started showing "No Disk" for playing DVDs. Got it to take a DVD a couple of times but after finishing those movied the following time it never worked. Went out and bought a DVD player as I don't want to mess with Customer Support.

  • SKB21 Dec 24, 2008

I am also having the same problem. No disc when ever I put the dvd. The funny part is that it plays all other media like mp3, vcd, cd and mp3 sony copied on a dvd disc... but will not play video disc.

Also one more common thing which i saw was that this problem will start occuring after 8-12 months. my warranty got expired last month and i don't how much I have spend to fix this issue.

add me to the list...system works great for all aspects EXCEPT it wil not play a DVD. I get the No Disk message.....This ha

  • fixya137 Jan 24, 2009

I get the same "No Disc" message even with brand new disks. I have tried cleaning the dvd drive with a cleaning disc but get the error more times than not - rotating the disc and putting it back in sometimes works. My machine is a Philips HTS6510.

  • mikied Feb 14, 2009

loads dvd then reads no disc

  • term21 Feb 15, 2009

I have the same "no disc" problem. It would not read any disc until I ran a disc cleaner, and then would only read one once in a while. I took a battery powered Coleman air pump and blew air into the disc slot. Now it works almost all the time. What the unit really needs is to be taken apart & cleaned with an alcohol swab. I suspect this unit is more susceptible to dust due to having a slot input instead of a sliding tray with a door.

I thought I was smart and purchased a well known brand.

But ******* I have gotten the same problem with no disk.

I bought this item in Nov. of '07 and it worked great...for about 3 months then the dreaded no disc message appeared and has ruined my life. Howvever after not using this DVD player for a month or so i had decided to tinker with it to try and get it to work and it appears i have found a solution that is working for me so far. After being fed up with Philips and trying their "solutions" because as we all know the U.S. sells DVD's with the wrong region code (ha funny Philips people) i began trying to make this stupid peice of garbage work in any way. What i came up with is this: 1.) insert your DVD and wait to see what happens. When you get the no disc readings this is what you do. 2) Eject the dvd but do not touch it 3). While the dvd is sitting in the slot press and hold down the play button on the remote control and continue to hold it down 4) it may take awhile but give it a chance, and hopefully the DVD will "resume play" and start anew. If holding the play button down does nothing then try holding it and releasing it in intervals until something happens. If nothing ever happens then i guess you SOL. I know this is not an desired fix to the problem but so far it has worked for me. I noticed this because the stupid thing will would read a cd and this got me thinking. This way is kind of a jump start to get the dvd going....hope this helps someone

Just want to reiterate a potential fix that was posted by someone else. It worked for me too.

Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman";} 1.) Insert your DVD and if you get the “no disc” message, eject the DVD but do not touch it.
2) While the DVD is sitting in the slot, press and hold down the play button on the remote control and continue to hold it down. The DVD might play at this point.
3). If holding the play button down doesn’t work, then instead try holding it and releasing it in intervals until something happens.
4) If this doesn’t work, then I guess you’re out of luck.

Here's another thing that worked for me -- basically you are changing the region of the player to correspond to the region of the DVD you wish to play.

    1) No DVD inside the
    player

    2) Turn on the player.

    3) On the remote press
    DISPLAY

    4) On the remote press
    9 9 9 9 X

    The X represents
either the number 1 (for region 1) or 2 (for region 2). Choose the number that
corresponds to the region of the DVD you want to play. So if the DVD is region
    1, press 9 9 9 9 1. If the DVD is region 2, press 9 9 9 9 2.

Contacted philips and they told me the software was in need of an upgrade. However philips only supplied me with a website and to download off of. The website is WWW.P4C.Philips.com. After entering your modle and serial number you can go to the download section and download the program and the pdf file and follw the instruction. This would work great if I had the capability to write it to a cd and insert in the dvd player however I do not so the next step is to call philips nad have them either send a cd with the download or take the unit it and have it srviced.

Was having a problem getting the DVD out and wouldn't let me put a disk in. We actually took the device apart and found that the round circle that moves the gears to pull the disk in was off track. Tried pushing it in lighting at first to get it to align and finally had to push it a little harder to snap by into the gear. Seems to have resolved the issue ...... for now.

I've had my hts 6500/37 for 6 months and it started doing this. I purchased a Philips cleaner, and ran it once and this fixed the problem (for now). I'm not confident that it'll last since I've read so many others are having the same problems. I really didn't think the cleaner would resolve the issue since I assumed it wouldn't read the disc, but I guess the micro-fiber cleaners did their job by just loading the disc. We'll see how it turns out.

Bend over cause you are screwed!! I spent the better part of a wk getting my chain yanked by PHILIPS!!! The HTS 6500 Home Theater System is defective and they know it!! Paid $320.00 a yr ago and have only watched about 5 movies or DVDs in that amount of time. Now it will not read any DVD, instead displays "no disc" also all buttons on unit front quit working. The remote works to power on and off but that is it. I raised hell with customer service and they told me all they could do was take another $162.00 from me!!! I don't think so!! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!! NEVER PURCHASE ANOTHER PHILIPS PRODUCT AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!! TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS THE SAME THING!!!!!!! THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL ON THE HTS 6500 AND PHILIPS KNOWS IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a philips hts6510 home theatre system and when i put a dvd in to play it says no disc

hi,
Normally a dvd player shows the message NO DISC when,
1. The disc inserted is bad.
2 The lase pickup unit inside the dvd lost its reading intensity, dirty lens or the spindle motor damaged .

In your case the second one happened. the intensity of the laser pickup unit has lost or the spindle motor faulty or there is some dust on its lens. just insert a cleaning cd in it for two or three times. then check again is the DVD is reading or not

if the problem remains then you have to check the motor and the laser pickup unit. the lase pickup unit have two laser emitter and receiver in its inside . one for reading and playing DVDs and the other for CD and MP3. also the spindle motor runs in different speed when u insert dvd and cd.

Open the cover of your dvd player and power it on insert an audio cd and watch is it reading or not also notice the speed of the spindling of the cd. if the audio cd reads and play. then the possible problem is the spindle motor

To conform it remove the audio cd and insert a dvd. watch the rotation of the dvd. if it feel very hard to rotate it then, the spindle motor is damaged. if so replace the spindle motor if it runs more the the speed of than audio cd then the laser pickup unit is faulty. Then u have to replace the laser pickup unit.
if you need any further assistance from me , feel free to contact me through fixya.

Doesn't read disc

Glenn's answer is incomplete. I have the same machine. I am currently experiencing a similar problem. The machine reads cd's, vcd's, but it will not read dvd's. Commercially purchased dvd's. The problem is not a format problem, not a zone problem. The dvd's work in other machines, so it is not a dvd problem. If anyone has any ideas, please respond. Thank you.

Run a dvd cleaner through system, and try again. If that fails, unplug the HTS from the wall outlet for 10-15 seconds, and replug it. If that fails, it will need to be repaired.
