Question about Hobart A200 Stand Mixer

1 Answer

Hobart A200T General Info / Back cover plate gasket

Just got a used A200T.
From the back plate:

SN 11-370-758
ML 33425
1/2 Hp 60 Hz

And with the switch plate off, inside the case, Motor info:

60-115 1
ML 17273A
SN B894232

1) I understand the Hp and Hz, and I'm guessing the 60 115 1 is 60Hz, 115 volts, single phase, but is there anything else encoded in the model/serial numbers? Is there someplace to look them up? I can't find a SN list for these machines anywhere. It would be nice at least to know what year this thing was made.

2) If I can locate a service manual, what years would apply to this mixer - have there been any big changes, so that a manual from, say, 1995, wouldn't cover my mixer, but some other range of years would?

3) I took the back cover plate off to replace the screws. One of the heads was sheared off, and the plate was bent. According to the parts manual, there should be a gasket. What I had was a thin piece of old paper. How thick is that gasket supposed to be? If I put the cover back on tight, it seems to hold the spacer/bearings/shaft too far forward, and the machine sounds rough. Not quite grinding, but rough. If I stand the cover plate off with a couple of thin washers, it sound smooth again. Is that normal?

That's all for now
Thanks for your help, and thanks for the website.

I'm a service tech for hobart,I'll type your serial number into our database and see what it brings up.The changes that have been made---older units use a mechanical start switch on the motor, the new units use an electronic start switch.the old units center shaft and gears have changed.the older units dont have bowl guards and the new units do.(this is a cage that goes around the bowl). The gasket that your talking about is just that--a thin paper. The paper wears and you get that symptom you describe and its normal.I'll get back to you.

Hi, I have a used Hobart A200T and the bowl yoke piece moves up and down slightly, even under a light load. It makes an annoying clanking noise. It's as if a spring somewhere is looser than it should be....

You may be correct about a loose spring. Check this:

Carefully lay the mixer on its back side to access the bottom of the mixer. Remove the cover screen covering the opening in the bottom of the mixer. Using an extension and appropriate socket, be sure the nut of the bowl lift rod is snug, slightly compressing the spring of the bowl lift rod.

Change Hobart N-50 110 V / 60 Hz to 230 V / 50 Hz

You would need to provide the correct power to match the maching, or replace the rotor, stator, controls to match the higher voltage, and worm gears to correct the speed, from 60 to 50 Hz. Unless you don't mind it running slower. Cheaper to find one that matches your local spec..

Hobart N50 stator assembly replacement

You can go to www.hobartservice.com. select parts and type the machine ML number from the data plate. here are 5 different ML options, otherwise I would have given you the part number.
It will open an exploded view of YOUR machine's build, complete with part numbers.
You can then call your nearest Hobart dealer for a cost and availability. They are still a current model, and for their size, an excellent mixer worth repairing.

I have a Hobart a200t industrial mixer which isn't running properly. When turned on, it just hums, and the gears don't move. I have been searching online and cannot find a free troubleshooting guide. I...

Hi, it is hard to determine exactly what the problem is without seeing it, however, that mixer usually uses a capacitor to help start the motor, and a switch, or relay, that are in the back of the unit. You probably will not find any troubleshooting guide, Hobart does not give up information easily. You can take it to an electric motor repair shop, and they will easily be able to tell which of those is the problem, and will be reasonable in price. Your other option is to contact Hobart locally for service assistance. Maybe one of the other Hobart techs here can help you out more.
