Question about Reddy Heater-30-55,000 BTU Variable

1 Answer

R55B Reddy Heater won't stay running. (PMS? menopause?)

A customer brought in a R55B Reddy Heater that won't stay running. (I'm not a repair shop, just trying to help the guy out)It runs for 10-30 min and shuts down. If you unplug and waite 20 sec. and plug back in it will re-ignight and run for 15 sec to 5 min and shut down again. I took fuel line, siphon tube and fuel screen out and cleaned. Removed nozzel, dissembled and cleaned. Removed cad cell and cleaned. R&R circut board looked for black spots and damage (none) Removed air pump, cleaned (no binding noted). Replaced all three air filters, set air pressure to 3.4 psi per. specs. Does the fan/pump motor have a automatic thermal overload switch? It spins freely, bearings seem ok Using a infrared thermometer the motor shows a temp 135f on the left side motor facing rear of unit and 116f on right side of motor. Front bearing 60 degrees f. Is there a way to test the cad cell? Please Help, I've run out of ideas. Thanks for your time

Wow! Yours is the best description of a problem I have ever seen!!! Before I read the whole thing I figured you missed the pressure check as most people do but you nailed it. This is what I would try, Replace the air filter, the fuel filter, and the fuel (to make absolutely sure there is no water in the fuel) and readjust the fuel/air mixture. If that does not do it replace the cadmium cell they only cost pennies. Let me know how you make out and good luck.

PS, I have one of these so I am pretty familiar with the problems.

This must be the night for Reddy heaters!

Here is my research for some other fellows with their Reddy's-- Let me kow if it helps -- or if you need something more hepful--

Reddy Heater - Troubleshooting Torpedo Heaters

If you brought the heater to our shop, and gave the above description, the first thing that we would do is check the air pump pressure.

Then, if the pressure is correct (not just close) we would check the photocell for signs of insect nest or something similar blocking the view of the eye.

You must troubleshoot to find out if the problem is fuel related or electronics related- maybe these tips will help (click for link).

My reddy heater is 110,000 BTU. It started spitering and sputtering like it was out of kerosene, but still has a half a tank. Any ideas?

If you brought the heater to my shop the absolute first thing I would do is shine a flashlight into the tank. Look for water droplets (or trash) rolling around the bottom of the tank. Keep in mind if there is a "layer" of water the light won't find it. Drain the tank if there is a "hint" of contaminants.

Next, I would check the fuel filter for stoppage or restriction.
