I have a vivitek rp51hd41a and it does not come on the ready light and the power light just blink .I checked the lamp and it doesn't look bad or broken like a fuse would like inside if it breaks. Does that make a different or can it still be bad.Comments: Dec 17, 2009- Thank You so much. Quick question. I turn on the TV and I see the lamp light up but it turns off and a couple of seconds and then turns back on after a couple seconds more. So the lamp goes off and on butr it does come on. Any other ideas on what could be the problem. Dec 18, 2009- so if the Ballast is bad will it still turn the lamp on and off. it still lights up but doesn't stay on. the lights in front of the set just blink real fast. can I put a meter on the lamp and see if its bad. if so what setting should I put the meter on and what reading do I look for. Can I also test the ballast. Dec 18, 2009- Hi, is there a way to test the lamp and if so how do I test it. What setting do I put the meter on if I can test it. Does the lamp come on and off if it is bad or does it come on and off if the ballast is bad. Dec 18, 2009- Thank you so much for your input. I will purchase a new lamp and will see what happens.Jan 06, 2010- Hi, I got a new lamp and it turns on and off. What could be the problem. Could it be the ballast, light engine, color wheel or something of that nature. I am not sure on what could be the problem. Please help!!!!!Jan 07, 2010- Hi, the fan that is in front of the lamp stays on and doesn't turn off. So the ballast board is the only thing left that could be bad and if so can it be fixed. Can it be a bad capacitor or something of that sort.

Thank you again, I will go ahead and order a ballast board. Quick question, I've found several on E-bay that look exactly like the one that I have in the TV. Does the number have to match up or as long as it looks similiar I should be ok. I don't want to order the wrong one.

Ok so I was on e-bay and most of the parts that I seen that look exactly like the one that I'm looking for only have this info given. Genuine OSRAM Ballast PT VIP 2AC/380 01 for DLP TV. Is this good enough for a part number or do I need more info on it. Please advise. Thank You

Hi, everyone is telling me if it says OSRAM BALLAST PT VIP 2AC/380 01 THEN IT'S CORRECT BOARD. IS THAT SO.

  • Ahmose Avin
    Ahmose Avin Feb 08, 2010

OK so I check the voltage on the ballast board at the power side connector and it gave me 368 volts of DC. So it is definately the ballast board then right.

    Ahmose Avin Feb 08, 2010

ok so they don't have any left. do you of anyone else who might have them in stock. Thanks

ok so I put a different ballast board and lamp in the tv and it did exactly the same thing. it powers on the fans come on and stay on, the lamp comes on and turns off and repeats the process. Any ideas. I'm not sure its the ballast or can it still be the ballast.

  • Ahmose Avin
    Ahmose Avin Feb 09, 2010

I just put in a ballast board from a different tv. I know it wasn't the right one but took the lamp and the ballast from a different tv just to see if it would work or do the same thing. Is that not a proper trouble shooting method. It did the exact same thing.

  • Ahmose Avin
    Ahmose Avin Feb 09, 2010

ok so I will do that. I can't find a ballast board for a reasonable price but sellers on e-bay are telling me if they look the same they will work. Most of the ones you showed me were out of stock.

  • Ahmose Avin
    Ahmose Avin Feb 09, 2010

I didn't try that. I can but I don't see an ark in the ballast board nor a puffed, leaky or swollen capacitor. I will try that right now.

  • Ahmose Avin
    Ahmose Avin Feb 09, 2010

Ok so I did what you told me to do which was take the lamp out and see if the color wheel spins which it does not. I get power to the ballast board because I see the electricity lighting up the fuse or resistor or whatever it is called at the rear of the board by the lamp connectors. The ballast board is not arked but the wheel does not turn at all. What do you think it is.

  • Ahmose Avin

So it can look perfectly fine but still be faulty.

I would like to say thank you to Ladywinn and eagle338 for helping me out with my issues. I will attempt to replace the color wheel and see what happens.

Yes a component level repair may be possible provided its just a faulty resistor or capacitor thats causing the problem. Look for any obvious damage on the ballast board like a faulty capacitor. Cracked/leaky/swollen. If it has a convex top as opposed to a flat one then you know it has gone bad. If there's nothing then measure the output DC voltage of the ballast board. For a normal ballast the voltage will be in the range of 250-300V. Remember you have to set the multimeter's voltmeter to DC to get a correct reading. Let me know what is the output voltage determined so that we can continue with the diagnosis.

Thats bad whoever said that you should certainly report them. Fixya will take stringent action on such people. Back to the problem, you should get a part that has the part number as the one that is there in your tv. Since you have the ballast out please take a good look at it there will usually be a 8-10 digit(or sometimes more) part number on it. Let me know that number and I will let you know where you can get the part. You have to be extremely careful with it as getting refunds from e-bay takes quite a while if you ordered the wrong part.

Different ballast board? I thought you didn't order it yet? Does it have the same part number?

  • eagle338
    eagle338 Feb 09, 2010

That is definitely not the right troubleshooting method. Parts of different sets are not compatible with one another more often than not. I suggest that you get an original replacement ballast to fix your problem. Experimentation could only risk you damaging the lamp again.

It means Ballast is trying to work but cant due to componet problem and yes Capacitor on Ballst Board could be Leaky not holding charge and from what you have said Lamp Fan is Fine Ballast is what Powers Lamp on!This set Has 2 different Ballast Boards Look on back of TV and if your serial# ends with {Hxck} # 3797552800
serial number that ends with {iuck} Part {3797556100} Try this Pull Lamp out and see if Ballast Board has a ARK coming from Ballast board if it does replace Lamp Encompass Parts Distrubtion has ballast for serial # ending in {iuck} But they want $255.94 1-800-638-3328
Lamps Call Mats Electronics 1-800-628-1118 $99.00 and heres another TIP Go to E-Bay Look under Electronics type in your Ballast Board Number I have Found Parts On E-Bay Alot Cheaper then what companys want.

I was wondering is your Color Wheel running OK,,Have you pulled Lamp out and turned TV on to see if you have a ARK coming from Ballast Board? And watch Color wheel turning?

  • ladywinn
    ladywinn Feb 09, 2010

Ballast board has a spark cap diode on it and it will ark if it is OK, Im beginning to Think TV has Bad Color Wheel ,seems to be the main problem with these TVs and Keep this in mind Color wheel turns at 9,000rpm if it stops, runs slow or not at correct speed TV will not turn on and Lamp will not Light. Color Wheel Part# {3250701500} Encompass should have them.

  • ladywinn
    ladywinn Feb 09, 2010

Color wheel should be turning and from what you said your problem is the Color Wheel and NOT the Ballast Board or Lamp.

I think you have a ADC that went bad and needs to be checked out. You need to have a service adjustment done by your Service Tech. You just can't fix the ADC without clearing the buffers, and all the other procedures needed to fix this TV. I think your TV repair persons are probably just going over the complex procedures to fix your TV.

Good luck and have a good evening!

Power light flashes 5 times and then ready flashes 3 times

Unfortunately that is 2 different errors... One being easily fixed. The 5 blinking power LED means its time to replace the Lamp, thats the easiest one to fix.

The blinking ready light means a "Fan 3 error". There is no reference on what that could be. It could be as simple as cleaning the air filter, or as complicated as replacing one of the fan units. You will need to contact Vivitek to know for sure:

You have one of the following issues.Be sure to check that the lamp door is properly attached. This can cause the the lamp light to go on.
1. Bad thermal sensor for the lamp.
2. Bad ballast.
3. bad supply voltage from power supply.
