Question about Zenith IQB50M90W 50" Rear Projection Television

2 Answers

I was trying to adjust the picture and went into advanced settings on the tv screen and hit something that put all kinds of squiggly lines and no picture on the screen. I cannot get the settings screen on the tv now to go back and fix it. I have tried unplugging to get it to reset but it won't . The model is a B508MMW. Please help.

I did it with the cable remote control and hit the settings button. Went into the different settings and did something I shouldn't have. Do I still use the remote from the tv and click on the menu button? Model is B508MMW

I have a Zenith projection tv model B50M88W. Trying to adjust the picture size, we used the remote control for the cable box and clicked on the settings button. We found what we thought would adjust the picture, but when we chose that setting the picture disappeared and was replaced with gray, white and black squiggly lines and no picture but sound. We tried to go back into the settings but you cannot get anything back up on the screen. When I used the tv remote, I was able to get into the menu but nothing there solved the problem. I also tried a hard reset, unplugging the tv for up to 4 hours and still nothing. Please help. If I could get the settings menu up again, I could go back in and fix the issue, but i can't. Thank you in advance for your help!

Thank you. I did attach the cable directly into the tv and was able to get the picture back. Thank you so much. I really appreciate your help.

Hi
Just read your comments and it sounds like the settings you changed where not in the tv but with the cable box.
Do you have a vcr or dvd that you could connect in the tv to try a different source of signal?
Can you bypass the cable box and connect the cable directly into the tv?
Try those and let me know

Hi.

You got into service menu, and from there into convergence settings.

Try pressing and holding the Menu button until the menu disappears. That works on most Zenith rear projections.
If it does not work, see if this set as an antenna button, try pressing or holding it down.
Try not to change anything else in the convergence service menu.

If that does not work, double check the model number, so that I can be more specific, I did not find any number responding to B508MMW.

Regards.

Turn off both cable and TV and disconnect cable box.

If the TV has a grid similar to the one below, then you are in convergence setup from service mode.

I am sorry about the negative feedback.

By the way, the question will be passed to a different expert. You can start troubleshooting from here.

White, squiggly lines on TV screen

This fault is technically called 'retraced lines'. There are many reasons for this fault. It will be best to contact any service technician. If the screen voltage to CRT is abnormal [higher than normal]; this kind of fault can occur. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Pull up older posts. Surf the site with patience. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/
One among the post have details about this fault "Retrace lines with picture".

White lines across tv screen

Without seeing the lines I can't be sure what your set has wrong, but here are a some possibilities:

If the lines are lines are confined to the top inch or two of the screen and the picture looks otherwise normal, the trouble is bad capacitors in the vertical output circuit. Fixable by replacing the bad parts.

If diagonal lines are across the entire face of the picture tube and the picture looks washed out, the trouble is often a bad capacitor on the 200-volt line to the picture tube. This may be on the main circuit board near the horizontal output transformer, or on the small circuit board plugged onto the end of the picture tube. Again, replacing the bad capacitor can fix this.

If your TV is actually an RCA, someone may have bumped a rear-panel adjustment. On the back of the TV near the bottom right are two small knobs. RCA left these adjustments exposed inside of putting them inside the set like other manufacturers. These sometimes get bumped if someone was behind the set cleaning, or if a pet got back there and hit them with a tail. The top knob adjusts focus, and the bottom knob adjusts something called G2 or screen voltage. If this gets turned up too high it can cause the faded picture and diagonal white lines. Turn the adjustment down until a black screen looks black instead of gray.

A bad picture tube or horizontal output transformer can also cause lines through the picture. If this is the case with your set, it's time for a new TV. The transformer is relatively inexpensive but labor costs aren't, and the repair bill may exceed $200. If the tube is bad, there's no point even considering repair. The tube cost alone exceeds the cost of new TV.

Hopefully your lines are easy and cheap to fix. Good luck, and thanks for using Fixya!

When ever there is some strong white on the screen it gets distored. For example. There was a white tent on screen and where the light was hitting it it was extremely pixelated and distorted. Ny ideas?

Hello
This fault can occur to mainly three reasons. ABL circuit failure. Low screen voltage or lack of emission from picture tube cathode. Just advance the screen voltage to a little, and observe the result. Screen control can be located on its Line Output Transformer [LOT]. there will be two variable controls built on to LOT marked as screen and focus. Screen control will be at lower side, and focus will bw on the top. Just advance [clockwise movemnt] to a little, not more, advance it till retrace lines are just visible on the screen. Before doing this, set all the picture controls, contrast, colour and brightness of the TV to zero. Once the retrace lines[thin horozontal white lines across the entire screen at about 1 inch distance with each other]; are visible, stop there, turn the screen control counterclockwise to just a point when these lines are just goes off. make this adjustment in a dark room so that you can set this point very correct. After this check the perfomance of the picture. If this does not help you, ABL circuit should be checked for any fault.
If emission of the picture tube has got down, even the screen adjustment said above won't help you. The only way is to replace the picture tube with same type and number. OK.

No picture

you may have turned down the screen control
It is the lower one on the flyback transformer
Just advance it enough to get the pix back. If you advance it too much it may get retrace lines in the pix or shut down.
turn very slowly.
Thanks Guy

Tv too dark to see

To get rid of the white lines look at the place where you turned the control. It should be called the screen control, turn down the screen control counterclockwise till the white lines just go away. If the picture is still dark, you will need to have this set serviced as there is a problem in the crt driver board, or the power supply board. good Luck

if no one answered then hear my thoughts.  odds are it is 2 ic's
I say that because that has been the problem with mine,
except it was the red.  it happened in 2000 when I bought the tv
and just now.  its going to cost me about 400.00 to have someone fix it.  I'm getting it fixed because it's been good to me. I watch dvd's vhs's and laser disks and feel it has plenty of life in it.

good luck
