Question about Linksys WRT54G2 Wireless Router

1 Answer

I have a Linksys WRT54G2 router set up at my house. My computer detects it but for some reason I can't connect to the Internet. I can get on my router's page, but the wireless network just won't work. When I click "diagnose and repair," the same error message keeps coming up: "There may be a problem with DNS configuration..." In the router page under "Status" and "Router," the IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway are all zeros. There isn't even any text for DNS 1, 2, or 3. If it makes a difference, I'm running under Vista. Now, I have the same problem as before where I hook the router up (even my iPod detects the wireless network), but there is no internet connection. The desktop I have the router connected to has internet access, but I can't get to the router page. Under ipconfig in cmd, it says that the IP address is, and when I type it into the address bar it doesn't work. In Network and Sharing center, under manage devices, the WRT54G2 doesn't even show up.

Check the ethernet cable, if you have a spare one, replace it.

Disconnect power cord (turning off is not enough) from both router and PC. Restart router first and PC afterward.

Disconnect ethernet cable from router , then go to installed devices and remove the ethernet card on PC from the list. Reinstall the ethernet card.

If still no luck, then the router may be faulty. In that case the first step in troubleshooting will be using the pinhole button to reset the router.

After resetting, check if the router is giving out correct IP. If it is, all the broadband settings will need to be entered again. In that case the best thing to do is calling the Internet Provider to get the setting at phone.

I wanted to add, that as a first thing you should check the lights on the router.

If router WAN and Internet lights are on and steady , and the LAN led is off, then you need to replace or connect properly the LAN cable, or check the ethernet card on computer.

If router has only one blinking light, or lights are not behaving normally, then the router may be in fault mode.

Linksys WRT54G2 Wireless router unable to connect to Internet

Try again by Disabling the WEP (or WPA), MAC Address Filtering and Firewall Setting Individually. Should be a problem with one of those. Then when you receive the Signals, try to Adjust using Bottom Up method. That means one setting at a time, Hardening the Security. Have you checked your DNS settings? Have you checked the Channels you are using? Re check them and try again.

Problems with WRT54G2 and DNS

If there is only zero on the ip add, sub mask etc then it would never work.Make sure your router is connected to a modem and that the latter can be hooked directly to a pc with cable and test if there is an internet connection. If there is a connection go back to your pc and connect to your wireless. Then go to start>cmd, a black screen would appear and type the following : ipconfig /iprenew .Then afterward type ipconfig and see if the zeros' you mentioned earlier changes to a value to the format of x.x.x.x .This should solve your problem.

Setup linksys wrt54g2 broadband router with prolink h9200 modem

You probably will need to make some configuration changes in the Linksys router, or in your computer, or both. Your are correct that you connect the Linksys WAN connection to the LAN connection of the modem. If your connection type is PPPOE, you will need to set that up in the Linksys with the username and password provided by your ISP, so the modem will allow you to login and connect to the internet. If that is how you were connecting to the modem with your computer, you will need to configure a new LAN connection in the computer in order to connect to the Linksys. You can then configure the Linksys through your web browser to connect to the modem.

If you find my suggestions to be helpful, please share with us some details so that others may benefit from knowing the whole story. Thank you!
