Question about LG 50PX1D 50 in. Plasma Television

2 Answers

My LG Plasma 50PX1D tv recently 'popped', now the picture is very dark. The pixels seem blackened and are not showing the full color. The images seem shadowed. Is there a part I can replace or a circuit board that may fix this problem??

I cannot find anything visually wrong with the circuit boards. Is there another way to find which board may be damaged? Would it typically be the X or Y sus boards? Could there be something else damaged because of the heat?

    Thanks

LG Plasma 50PX1D tv popped and now the picture is blackened but the sound is good. Which circuit board may be the cause of this?? Y sus or Z sus? Is there an easy way to tell which board has the problem? Could this also be a heat issue?

    Thanks

Well There is always a part that can nswerwith this TV. LG's 42" was a recall for the same problem. Some of the Capacitors on the sustain board have overheated and died. (Board made in Korea)

These caps drop out because of problems elsewhere, possibly on the power unit or one of the other boards. It is the cheaper option to have this problem looked at and fixed professionally. Many on here who have played "board swap jockey" have had only a tempory fix and have ended up coming back to get more info and spend more money than if they had it corrected properly thye first time. The color engine has to be retuned whenever boards are exchanged or repaired. This is an involved task using a screen hatch using a circuit diagram and specialised tools.

Any chance you can claim it under warranty?

Thanks for using FIXYA.

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. A plasma TV is a very hard working device. It is working harder than any TV that has been built before, and as a result it produces a lot of heat. 75% of technical problems in plasma TV's are caused by overheating problems. X, Y sustain, buffer boards controls picture, fires the gas, and many others functions. When either of these boards goes bad common problems include negative image, no image, vertical or horizontal stripes on picture, turns on and than turns off, and many more. You’ll need to open the back off the TV and check for any swollen/bulged/leaky capacitors on these boards and replace whichever has gone bad. All this is only recommended if you have electrical expertise & know how to solder/re-solder components as these units contain high voltages even when switched off.

Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.

Thanks

This can be a heat issue, you'll need to open the back off the TV and check for any blown capacitors on the Y-sus and Z-sus board. Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.

    Thanks

I heard a pop. The TV went off then when I turned it back on the white has red pixels showing. Seems one of the LCD colors went out. Is there a fix. The TV is jsut over a year old.

This is a plasma tv not lcd. The pop mostlikely was a part on the y main board. IF the y-main voltage shifts the set will have red sparkels.

Dots on screen

The snowy dots and dots are typically from a poor signal going into the TV.

If there are colored pixels that stay lit all the time (like a red pixel and never goes away) and for any input, that’s called a stuck pixel.

A stuck pixel may be caused by a bad Y-Sustain, Y-drives, Z-sustain, and or a bad plasma panel.

Good Luck.

Either X,Y, or Z-boards seem to have developed a problem, when this happens it results in a 'sound-no-picture' condition. If its under warranty take it back, if not have your local tv repair center fix it for you....

Any info on picture problems with LG 50PX1D-UC Plasma? The picture is slighly fuzzy and seems to pulse in brightness

Your TV is going to need a Z-Sustain PCB.

The Z-Sustain controls the contrast of the image, it is also a common part to fail.

TO GET THE DIFFRENT BETWEEN LCD VS PLASMA

LCD
LCD stands for liquid crystal display. These types of displays have been around for awhile and are commonly used with computers. One reason for their big popularity is the ability to produces a better picture than CRT monitors but also being much thinner.
Pro’s
  • Low Energy Consumption – LCD monitors use very low amounts of power. This is why it is very commonly used in battery powered devices.
  • LCD screens also reduce the amount of glare on the screen which can be very beneficial if your TV is in a room with lots of light.
  • If an image is left on the screen too long, LCD screens are less likely to experience the image being burned into the screen. If this does occur, it’s easier to repair than other types of TV’s.
Con’s
  • The viewing angle of an LCD TV is typically not as great as Plasma but the difference is not great enough to make a huge difference.
  • LCD TV’s can sometimes get dead pixels which aren’t typically covered under warranty. Although they are very small, they can become very annoying.
  • Brightness levels aren’t as great as Plasma and it’s not possible to display darks quite as dark.

Plasma
Plasma technology hasn’t been as widely used as LCD in previous years but has become very popular in large HDTV’s. Although they have historically been more expensive than LCD TV’s, they are becoming more comparable in price.
Pro’s
  • Brightness and color are the major advantages of Plasma TV’s. They produce rich colors along with very deep blacks.
  • Their wide viewing angles allow more people to be able to watch TV comfortably.
  • The pixels of Plasma TV’s are lit individually unlike LCD screens. Because of this feature, the pixels can be completely turned off to display truck black colors.
Con’s
  • The lifespan of a Plasma TV is typically shorter than other types of TV’s. The lifespan can be extended by turning down the brightness of the screen.
  • Plasma TV’s are more susceptible to screen burn-in where an image is “burnt” onto the screen when left on the screen too long such as a network logo in the bottom right corner of the screen.
  • Plasma TV’s require a panel of glass to cover it. This glass can reflect light and make it difficult to see the picture. If placed in a dark room, this typically isn’t an issue.

42 inch LG Plasma TV - Lost picture

Hi , I recently had the same problem which I was determined to fix . So I did a few weeks of research to find that it was the Y SUS board which burns out. I'm sure you realized that the TV gets hot. Personally I think this is why. circuit boards don't like heat and I've learned that the cooling fans are a joke. I replaced the board and got my picture back. I proved the fan theory because after the screen started to act up. I placed a cooling fan near the vent holes on top and the problem cleared right up,It also helps if you lower the brightness which helps out on the heat situation.I will soon be adding a fan with a temp. sensor. This shoud help if your screen has lines when you initially turn the cool TV on.then I have Some other costless solutions. Hope this helped these are great TV's and like our cars we maintain them not throw them away..................................Mr Wiseman
