It means that the processor does not work. try putting the old one back and try that.. now the rams should not cause this to fail so my best bet is just try the old one back in there and let me know if that helps.

HP xw4400 workstation wont boot/start if RAM are inserted.

If you are increasing the RAM from 1Gb to 2Gb then the RAM maybe incompatible. Try using a RAM module as the original make and speed.
Try installing one RAM module at a time to see if one of the RAM modules is faulty.
Removing the RAM will give a POST error code of no RAM or faulty RAM.

Nothing happens when I press the power button. No

What about the power supply? I bet it's supply's issue. Otherwise make sure that PWR button wires are connected properly and to the correct terminals of the motherboard

Most likely your motherboard does not like the ram you installed.. remove one or both of the ram chips leaving the one that was in originally.. test with that chip .. if it works something is wrong with the new ram: it's either the wrong speed or voltage for your motherboard or possibly defective.. you can consult your motherboard manual or motherboard manufacturers site for a complete list of approved RAM.
Keep in mind, most gaming memory requires a higher voltage than generic memory and some motherboards just dont produce it..

It could be the processor also (unless you bought another one of those, too), but chances are that you are right in suspecting the RAM. It's a quick troubleshoot, as well - buy a new stick, install it, see what happens.

The system behavior is a tad curious - not something i've ever seen with a memory problem - usually you'll get a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) and an error code that vaguely refers to the memory. Nevertheless, something isn't right, and I don't think a HDD can cause that level of mayhem, but RAM certainly can.

Let me know how it goes after you swap it out - I'd be interested in knowing if that was it.

Cheers
Nick
