Thank you for your sugestion. When you mentioned power-save mode I relized right away that you are right. This only happens to me when my computer isn't plugged in. So I checked the power-save setting and they where all wrong. Since I changed them this hasen't happened.
    Thanks Krista

Since I bought the Aspire 5100 in Dec. 2006, it has crashed 4 times. When it crashes, a weird screen comes up, and everything is frozen, so you cannot do anything but power it down. When you try to power back up, most of the time it will not boot up. Rarely, it will boot up but the keyboard and mouse are locked, so again, you can't do anything. The first time it happened was March 2007, about 90 days after I bought it. I sent it in to Acer, and they replaced the motherboard. The same exact thing happened in June 2007 and in Oct 2007. They replaced the motherboard each time. With this trend, I knew that if it happened outside the 1-year warranty, Acer would tell me I'm on my own, so I called to complain that they never fixed the problem. They did confirm that outside the 1-year warranty, I would be on my own! (Sad way to stand behind your product and to take care of your customers!) Well, it just happened again mid-February, they told me to take a hike, and I got my attorney involved. In researching this problem, I spoke to a very experienced computer repair center who confirmed they have been getting in these models with the same exact problem. He confirmed that something is causing the connections for the keyboard, the mouse, and the USB ports to blow on the motherboard, which is why Acer kept replacing the motherboards on my unit until I was out of warranty. And to compound the problem, even if I wanted to have it repaired, it seems the motherboards can't be gotten. He also pointed me to posts from Italy, from Ontario Canada, and from several other states in the U.S. with users with this Acer model outlining the exact same scenario. So, I'm stuck with a computer that doesn't work and that cannot be fixed! What Acer should have done was a recall to fix their obvious design flaw OR to make it right with customers who paid good money for a reliable laptop and instead got in essence a defective product. But that would cost Acer too much money, so I guess they figure they'll field complaints until people get tired and give up. I'm working on a legal alternative. Contact me at ejulaw@hotmail.com if you'd like to explore options. My name is Ed, and the ejulaw stands for Equal Justice Under Law, which Acer counts on us not exercising.

This could happen when the computer goes into power-save mode. How often does this problem occur? I would suggest 2 things

1.) upgrading the systems BIOS.
you can download the bios from here: http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_5100.html

2.) upgrading the video card drivers.

the only thing I have been able to do when this happens is force a shut down and completely remove all power sources to the laptop battery pack and chargers, wait a few seconds and restart.. this seems to be a common glitch with these acers... Mine has done this since day one I have had it for three years now and it is still functioning fine... so do that if ya want ..

replace the battery. Batteries usually only last about two years and it sounds like it just cant hold any more juice. To find a battery go to google.com and type in the model of computer and push search. Sorry for the news but its an easy fix

I am not sure which you are talking about either. But I will venture to say that I had a similar problem once where setup would not complete on my system either. I initially thought that I had a bad or dirty disc but later after running a few tests, I found out that my HDD was full of bad sectors. Thus I ended up replacing the HDD and all is well. I would try running a stand alone formatting software or you could try doing a complete format vs. a quick format during Windows setup. If setup still won't complete after a complete format then run a surface scan or a HDD regenertion program to verify the integrity of the drive. This will tell you if you have a bad drive or not.

Black screen on Acer 5100, but will work with external monitor

It sounds like the control board or cable for the LCD may be damaged. If you're still under warranty, you'll need to send it back to Acer to be repaired.

Is your laptop still under warranty? I would go to the manufacturer first if it is.
If not:
the system clock is run by the CMOS battery. When low will cause a host of problems. Change it and let me know if this fixes your problem.

If you are able, when the pc is booting up keep pressing F8, this will take you to safe mode and not allow the graphics driver to run. When in the safe mode options, select either Last known good configuration or start windows in safe mode. Last known good configuration should find the last good system settings, when it reboots. Start windows in safe mode allows you to go into windows using the administartor account, and then you should select system restore and restore back to the day before or just before you updated the graphics driver.
