Question about Whirlpool Ultimate Care II LSQ9564J Top Load Washer

My washer when it gets to the spin cycle makes a terrible sound almost like a grinding sound and will not spin. I turned it over and it appears that there is some black material on the ground almost like a belt is wearing but I can't seem to find a belt on it.

How hard is this to replace? And how will I know that is the problem once I tear it apart? I for certain can not afford a new washer so I really need to get this one fixed. Thanks also for the quick response!

It was the motor coupling that went. Thanks for the help

It sounds like your drive coupler is bad. There is actually no belt on this washer it is a direct drive. The coupler sits in between the motor and the transmission and is a part number 285753a. Here is how to replace the coupler.

1) tip the unit back and lean in against the wall
2)remove the 2 claps on the top and bottom of the white pump and the pump will side off the motor shaft.
3)You can kind of bend the pump and wedge it up out of your way to the left.
4)There will be two clamps holding the motor in place but they will have either 1/4 inch or 5/8 screws that you have to remove. Then pry these two clamps off the motor with a flathead screwdriver. (be sure to remove motor harness and the two wires off the capacitor)
5)The motor will then drop down and your coupler will be attached to that side of the motor shaft. The other side of the coupler will be on the transmission shaft. Pry both of these peices off (theres also a black rubber piece that is in between the two plastic pieces) which is what is on the ground it will be probably all torn up.
6)the new coupler will have an aluminum insert in the middle so you will need to take a deep well socket turn it over so the small drive side is on the coupler and use it to hammer on the new coupler to the transmission and motor shafts.
-make sure that you get the aluminum flush with the ends of the shafts. You dont want it to go on too far or not far enough.
-a trick for the motor is to hold it in between your knees and hammer the coupler on i use a pair of channel locks as my hammer and the socket.
7)place the rubber piece one the legs of the coupler on the transmission side and you have to line up the legs on the motor side to put the motor back into place. (make sure the 4 rubber grommets that are on the motor are all in place).
-you can spin the motor from the front shaft to rotate the coupler and make it easier to line it up.
8) put clamps back into place and put the pump back on the motor shaft
-to line up the shaft with the pump you can spin the coupler with your fingers to spin the opposite side of the motor shaft.

Its alot of instructions but its not that bad of a job to do yourself I just made them very in depth.

Good Luck!_MJ_

The black stuff is probably the clutch pad dust and metal shavings. It has a centrifugal clutch and when the pads wear out it's just metal rubbing metal. The pads can be replaced if the metal housing they go in isn't worn away.

Part 5 on this diagram is your clutch.

Grinding noise before spin cycle

Good Morning John,

I see that you are hearing a grinding noise before the spin cycle in your Frigidaire washer, model# GLET1031CS0. A certain amount of "grinding" or gear sounds are normal in a heavy-duty washer. If you notice that the grinding sound appears to be getting louder, I suggest contacting either the manufacturer or your local authorized technician for further assistance. Hope this is helpful.

-Best Regards-

Loud noise during spin cycle and agitator won't rotate

the machine is nknown to have bad main seals, in turn leading to the corrosion of the spin bearing, in which case makes it sound as if a helicopter is landing in your laundry room

Terrible noise when agitating

Your transmission has gone out. The reason the spin cycle works is because the transmission spins two different ways and you agitate way stripped the gear. Some places rebuild them. Try with your local stores maybe they can rebuild it or get you a good used one. If not you can order a new one from
