The symptoms you describe are often caused by a lid switch malfunction. It may be loose or not making good contact. hence, the reason why you can get it to work sometimes by lifting and closing the lid. As you open and close the lid, you should hear a "clicking" sound as the lid switch is activated. If you do not hear the switch, check to make sure the lid strike in still intact. This is a small plastic piece mounted on the lid that pushes down on the switch through a slot on the wash tub opening on the right hand side. If this piece breaks off, it will give the same symptoms of a broken lid switch. Next, check the two mounting screws on the right side of the wash tub opening to make sure they are tight. These are the mounting screws for the lid switch. Sometimes they come loose and the switch does not make proper contact. If you attempt all these preliminaries, and the switch still does not seem to be working properly, replace it. A replacement can be found at searspartsdirect.com. Just type in your model number and the part will be located under the "Top and Cabinet" heading. For instructions on how to replace a lid switch, click on the following link:

This is a simple and inexpensive repair if you wish to accomplish this on your own. A replacement switch usually cost between $25 and $35. I hope this helps you. Let me know if you require further assistance.

NOTE: For future reference, it is strongly recommended that you do not slam the washer lid or place heavy objects on the lid. This can cause damage to the lid switch.

It could be the lid switch or the timer.

There should be a spring clip that holds the timer knob on. It or the timer knob may need replaced. Here is a picture of the timer knob and the spring clip. Sure hope this helps and best wishes.

Washimg machine agitates and drains but does not spin

Mine had same issue. My problem was with the switch. Try gently wiggling the knob, then move it to the end of a rinse cycle, just before the spin cycle. Pull the knob out, and the timer should start clicking, after a few seconds you will hear a clunk sound as the transmission engages then starts spinning. I disassembled the unit and removed the motor, only to discover the coupler was not damaged.

You can replace the switches very easily, and you can order the parts you need from Sears on line. BUT you need to know the full model number of your unit to do it.

Find the part on the diagram that you need to replace and then look it up on the chart to find out what it costs.

I own a kenmore top loading machine model number 110 10 amp 60 hertz 120 volts the machine gets power and runs but the big control knob that controls the diffrent cycles is running only about 20 seconds...

sounds like you should replace timer (big control) timer motor is part of timer. Is timer knob speeding thru cycle that fast or just start/stop.
110 is manufacturer code for whirlpool, number after decimal is model number. tech sheet avail inside console by unsnapping left and right console covers and removing hidden screw at front bottom corners, pull forward slightly then fold console back (hinged at rear top).

Kenmore series 80 model 110

If you are talking about the Cycle Selection knob, turn the washer to an OFF position, or unplug. I can't remember if you need to pull the knob out or leave pushed in, but the knob will come off by turning it counter-clockwise. After unscrewing it and removing, the plastic dial under the center knob will simply pull off. I hope this helps you. If you need further assistance, please let me know.
