The only cause of this problem is that you have not used salt in the machine, salt is vital for the machine to run efficiently, it will take about 2 wash cycles for the salt to take effect once you have filled it with the salt

How can I lighten or remove a burn mark from plastic counter top?

I suggest completely removing the burned area, and installing a permanent marble slab or butcher block trimmed into the rest of the counter top to serve as a "cutting board" or similar food prep surface. Some examples are shown here. Of course, you can try sanding and if it does not come out the way you hoped, this could be a "plan b" for the sanding process detailed below.

You could sand it - but that will reduce the thickness of the counter top wherever you sand. If the discolored area of the burn isn't too deep you may only need to lightly sand - or decide to sand to a depth that lightens the discolored area enough to your liking. You will need a fair amount of sand paper, as it will tend to clog up due to the plastic heating up - and melting under the pressure of the sander.

Sanding will only work if the counter top is one piece, solid color or has a design that is NOT only topical. If it is a laminate, do not sand down through it to the substrate.

Start out with a rough grit sand paper to quickly remove material. It is important that you do not sand in one direction all the time. Use of an "orbital sander" will automate the sanding process for you. As you progress, change to finer and finer still grits so that scratches from the rougher grits are minimized. The last sand paper should be so fine that it is almost polishing - rather than removing material. When sanding, be sure to expand out in all directions from the burn mark so that the resulting dimple in the surface isn't as noticeable. A gradual slope to the lowest point is difficult to detect.

Good luck!

My Krylon Looking Glass spray comes off with water after I sprayed the outside of a vase, can I use a varathane to seal it so it won't? it was very expensive spray and says durable but it's not!

Glass is very hard to paint. If you are sure that it is clean and has no grease on it, you may want to use fine grit sand paper to rough the surface of the glass

Sand and grit residue on the glasses and coffee mugs after running cleaning cycle, unless the dishes are rinsed off first, and where are the filters and how do you clean them.

Do you have hard water? Many states have passed laws that outlawed phosphate as an ingredient in dishwasher detergent. If you have hard water, the detergents don't work very well anymore. The "sand and grit" is probably hard water deposits (calcium and magnesium). Not harmful but it looks awful on your dishes. There are some new products that were designed to solve this exact problem. They are inexpensive and effective. Can't say the name or I'll get banned (again). Internet search will uncover it.

I left cillit bang on the stainless steel hob too long and it has horrible stains on it

Use appropriate solvents to remove the plastic. If you are skilled sanding in straight lines and matching the grain in your metal use 180 grit - 240 grit blending and using your eye. You could also use scotch brite #7447 purchase at an automotive store. This pad after solvent or used with it could remove the plastic or both sand and pad.

Debruce Polish is the best our there at maintaining a pristine finish and it is eco-friendly and odorless, we use this in all our properties AND the ceramic cook tops it is safe for glass. It also removes rust... we just love it. We find DeBruce polish at debrucepolish.com.

Crusty stuff on glasses after wash cycle

I never figured out what caused this problem. I cleaned it and took it all apart, could not find any debris lodged anywhere. However, I solved this problem! I now only use Cascade Complete dishwasher detergent. Has to be the "complete" version of Cascade. No more grit - nice clean dishes now and sparkling glasses.
